Masters programme, 120 ECTS-credits

The Master's programme in Advanced Product Design develops you into a skilled industrial designer with the toolkit and mindset needed to create, develop and design new relevant product solutions. Students explore design through the lens of environmental and societal challenges. The education is hands-on and practice-based, and a majority of the projects are carried out in collaboration with external partners.

The Master's programme in Advanced Product Design develops your design competence by providing professional tools, hands-on work methods, creative challenges and an inspiring study environment. The programme combines the analysis of complex contexts with the identification of relevant design opportunities and a holistic ideation scope, using visualisation techniques and the tools required in the professional-oriented practice of industrial design.

The programme is international in its scope and all education is conducted in English. About 80 per cent of students come from abroad. For instance, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Austria, France, England, Turkey, Spain, China and New Zeeland.

Umeå University, Umeå Institute of Design

Umeå Institute of Design provides five academic programmes focusing exclusively on industrial design and related specializations. Programmes range from Bachelors to Masters and Doctoral levels. We offer highly competitive, professional and international industrial design educational programmes supported by exceptional technical facilities and resources. The Institute is organized within the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University.

Master Programmes

At Master’s levels, there are three internationally oriented and specialized two-year programmes leading to a Master’s degree comprising 120 ECTS-credits.

The three disciplines are:

• Advanced Product Design
• Interaction Design
• Transportation Design

The master programmes are run in English and are open to international students. EU-citizens pay no tuition fees.

International Students

Students from all over the world are currently enrolled in our Master's programmes creating a unique blend of creative energy and cross-cultural enrichment.

Currently, we have students from 30+ countries including Norway, Canada, Denmark, UK, India, Turkey, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Sweden, Finland, Korea, China, Germany and USA. Close to 80 percent of the MA students come from other countries than Sweden.

Cooperation with the Industry

In all four programmes, the Institute cooperates regularly with a number of companies and organizations including Google, IKEA, Nokia, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Cars, Ericsson, ABB, Electrolux and Husqvarna, several of which are also strongly involved with the Institute’s research programmes.
