In countries such as the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, Japan or Brazil, new reactors are being built, while other reactors are in final shutdown, some of them have already been dismantled, others are in progress and others will be dismantled in the near future. future. Spain has different nuclear reactors, including reactors in operation, in permanent shutdown and in the process of being dismantled.

In addition to nuclear power plants and other nuclear fuel cycle facilities (nuclear facilities), more than a thousand radioactive facilities are in operation in Spain, both in the industrial sector, in medical applications, in teaching or in research . In this framework, the monitoring of environmental and natural radioactivity plays an increasingly important role in the social and environmental field. The special case of radon gas and the presence of NORM radioactive material in certain industries such as ceramics or the construction industry stand out.

In both nuclear and radioactive facilities, it must be guaranteed that their operation does not affect the health of people (facility workers and the general public), as well as avoiding any environmental alteration. In this context, studies aimed at monitoring and improving nuclear safety and radiological protection of said facilities are of vital importance.
