Journalism is vital to democracy, and as a journalism educator, you will get to be the one to instil those values and skillsets in future generations. With a bachelor’s degree in teaching journalism, you will graduate ably equipped to engage your students in writing, design, and digital storytelling.

We work closely with our Teachers College to craft a curricular experience that balances advocacy and excellence in the classroom. Because a huge part of learning how to teach is actually doing it, you will take the same journalistic storytelling and multimedia design classes as other department majors in addition to spending several weeks working alongside a secondary teacher, followed by 16 weeks of student teaching.

Outside the classroom, you will help coordinate or teach at our annual J-Day seminar, which brings hundreds of high school students onto campus and be instrumental in our annual journalism workshops. Students tell us they arrive on campus and find more than an academic home; they find a sense of belonging that connects with them almost immediately, and they launch onto a career path that leads to meaningful work.

Students leave prepared for careers as middle and high school journalism teachers, equipped with the tools and cutting-edge pedagogy that emboldens young minds and creates pathways to careers in journalism.

Ball State University's Teachers College is the largest educator preparation program in Indiana. Ball State University offers over 30 nationally recognized programs across six colleges. Students in Ball State University's program are provided with many opportunities to exhibit excellence in their content area and pedagogy through rigorous preparation and rich and diverse practicum experiences.
