This online CBT offering is a stand-alone program for those that are not able to attend our CBT certificate in person in Toronto.
Cost: $895 +HST per module
Course Highlights:
Approved by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, our online CBT program is a robust training in the skills of this much-needed modality. During studies, students proceed through written lectures, talks, case studies and video demonstrations, and complete practice assignments along the way. Students receive personalized, attentive feedback from a veteran teaching team known to make online learning fun and interesting. Though Canadian in origin, the online CBT program is comprehensive in nature and designed with a broad audience of students in mind, both culturally and with regard to practice diversity. Please note that oral and written fluency in English is required.
The program is divided into two levels. In Level 1, CBT - Foundations, students learn the fundamentals of the CBT modality. In Level 2, CBT - Advanced Practice, students learn how to apply these interventions by choosing one of three streams (students can take more than one stream if they wish). Students will leave the course with competence in this important modality and can go on to apply their training across a wide variety of contexts.
All courses/levels within the program are a 36-hour course of study. Students may choose to end their training after Level 1, or progress to one of three streams in Level 2. Upon completion of each course/level, students will have obtained strong academic foundations and skills-based knowledge, as well as a toolkit of worksheets available for duplication for use in their practice. Please note that to be eligible for Level 2, students must have completed Level 1 (or an approved equivalent). The cost for each course/level is $895 and must be completed within a maximum of 12 weeks.
Courses:
Upon completion and submission of all assignments, and following their review by the teaching team, students will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of each course.
Please note that completing any of these courses within the program does not qualify you to register with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. There are currently no accredited CBT training programs in Canada, as there is no formal accreditation process for CBT in Canada. Please be advised that these courses are approved by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and completion of these courses will satisfy most continuing education requirements. This course is also compliant with the requirements to join the Canadian Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapists.
Note the courses in this program are suitable for students with clinical backgrounds only, trained and capable of managing crisis clients.
Once payment is received, students will receive a license key and can begin their studies. Course content is varied and made up of lectures, viewings, demos, supplemental readings, and professional/reflective exercises. There are no tests or exams; however, there are assignments for each module, which must be completed and then submitted online. The assignments in each course do not have to be completed in one sitting but please note: you have a maximum of 12 weeks to complete your studies. We uphold a policy that we do not extend or re-open the software to you once your 12-week period of learning is up. Plan accordingly; if you will be away, you must catch up on your work. Please also note that in the event of cancellation, a $100 administration fee will be applied.
Waitlists
Due to the level of individual feedback afforded to students in all our online programs, we can only accept a limited number of students at any one time. This may result in your being waitlisted at the time of registration. You will be notified in as short a time as possible with an approximate start date.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was first used during the 1950s and 1960s, pioneered by American Psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Beck. Its’ first application was with hospital in-patients experiencing clinical depression. But as the decades passed, the interventions Dr. Beck used began to undergo the structuring is required to be used with more people in many other situations. Eventually, CBT made its way out of in-patient units and into the global population at large. This course is a thorough introduction to the foundations of cognitive-behavioral practice. Designed with the cultural and contextual implications of a wide variety of students in mind, students will leave with the basic practical techniques required to begin practice, including a course-pack of 20 worksheets (the CBT “interventions”) that can be duplicated for practice. Please note that you will require your textbook as soon as you begin your studies.
Required Textbook: Josefowitz, Nina and Myran, David (2017). CBT Made Simple: A Clinician’s Guide to Practicing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Oakland, CA: New Harbinger Publications (note: this text must be purchased through New Harbinger in order to gain access to tools used throughout the course).
Stream A: CBT With Mental Health and Addiction
36 hours / maximum of 12 weeks
$895 + tax
For reasons that are many, the incidence of almost every mental health disorder is rising quickly. The World Health Organization has predicted that clinical depression alone will be a leading cause of workplace disability worldwide by 2020, second only to ischemic heart disease. Suited for those in clinical practice with adult mental health disorders, this level will apply the interventions of CBT to the most commonly seen DSM-5 disorders in everyday practice, including depression, anxiety, and substance use. This course will also assist practitioners in learning to think critically about the nature of the mental health “epidemic” and how to be a change agent within it. Students will leave with convenient “treatment summaries” for each disorder (the “course-pack”) that they can refer to in session and apply to practice right away. No textbook required.
Stream B: CBT With Complex Mental Health
36 hours / maximum of 12 weeks
$895 + tax
Practitioners will routinely find themselves challenged by cases that are more complicated in nature. These challenges might occur because the symptoms list is confounding because there is more than one diagnosis, or because the presenting issue is complicated in origin. Topics covered in this course include personality disorder, OCD, PTSD (single and multiple-episode traumas) and a bipolar spectrum disorder. Students will leave with convenient “treatment summaries” for each disorder (the “course-pack”) that they can refer to in session and apply to practice right away. No textbook required.
Stream C: CBT with Families, Children, and Youth
36 hours / maximum of 12 weeks
$895 + tax and textbook
As one part of a family system encounters change, the whole unit must adjust. This course looks at how to apply the cognitive-behavioral model to work with couples, children, and youth. Looking closely at common, contemporary issues that present in the therapy room, students will leave with an understanding of how to apply the skills learned in Level 1 in creative and concrete ways to couples, children, and adolescents (4-18 years). Students will leave with an 80-page workbook of tools that includes CBT worksheets formatted to couples, kids, and youth that can be downloaded and duplicated. This course ends with a look at cultural considerations of “the family” with special focus on work with first nations, aboriginal and indigenous communities. Please note that you will require your textbook as soon as you begin your studies.
