Environmental Science & Policy

(PhD, MS)

(MPS in Coastal Zone Management, Exploration Science, Fisheries Management & Conservation, Marine Conservation)

The world-class academic program in Environmental Science and Policy (EVR) is interdisciplinary, broadly representing the functional and cultural intersection among humans, the sea, and the environment. Our faculty and students embrace the ideology that we simply cannot solve the world's greatest sustainability crises without accepting people and the environment as two, intrinsically linked components of the same Earth system. To be effective in our efforts to protect biodiversity and enhance ecosystem sustainability, we foster and embody critical thinking across disciplinary boundaries, with technology and innovation at the forefront of every journey. We have a dynamic team of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to ensuring that "humans and nature exist in productive harmony" (NEPA, 1969), and this guiding principle is represented by a wide array of disciplines from archaeology, to mathematical ecology, to climate change, and fisheries science.

Marine Geosciences

(PhD, MS, and certificate program)

(MPS in Environmental Geology)

Marine Geosciences is focused on studying the geology, geophysics, and geochemistry of the earth system beneath, within, and above the oceans. Students work closely with faculty at the forefront of research on earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, hydrothermal seafloor vents, and paleoclimate. MGS faculty and students also emphasize interdisciplinary study where geological phenomena interact with or are influenced by processes generally studied in other disciplines, such as ocean currents, climate, and biological evolution. This research uses pioneering remote sensing techniques to assess the earth's crustal movement and sedimentation in coastal zones.

Meteorology & Physical Oceanography

(PhD, MS)

The Meteorology & Physical Oceanography graduate program was founded on the premise that oceanic and atmospheric dynamics are governed by a set of similar physical principles, and that much insight can be gained by studying their dynamics from a common perspective. The program requires students to develop expertise in both systems and prepares students to conduct leading-edge research using a complementary set of theoretical, observational, and modeling approaches. The curriculum forms a strong foundation for research on a broad spectrum of topics that include air-sea interaction, the global thermohaline circulation, tropical cyclones, El Nino, the Madden-Julian Oscillations, and the evolution of the Earth's climate.

Ocean Sciences

(PhD, MS)

(MPS in Applied Remote Sensing and Natural Hazards & Catastrophes)

The mission of the Ocean Sciences department is to provide our students with specialized knowledge in important ocean science sub-disciplines as well as a broad understanding of the ocean as a key component of the Earth System. Our students advance the understanding of physical, chemical, and biological processes in the ocean and their interactions. Students learn first-hand about instrumentation and methods to measure the ocean using both in-situ and space-based sensors, and about the laboratory, analytical, and numerical models to understand oceanic processes. Our graduates develop into international leaders of ocean research, into teachers and communicators of ocean sciences, and into leaders and advisors of marine education, policy, and conservation.
