“Civil and environmental engineers are the doers responsible for improving living standards and serving communities in which we live. They grapple with many challenges such as overcrowded roads and highways, functionally obsolete bridges that are unable to carry today’s heavier loads, crowded urban areas and communities, contaminated groundwater aquifers, and air pollution. We seek ways to solve these problems better, faster and cheaper. With these challenges come the rewards and pride in making contributions to society.” — Balasingam Muhunthan, CEE Department Chair and Professor
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Washington State University is one of the nation’s preeminent programs in both undergraduate and graduate civil and environmental engineering education. Our programs provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of engineering and science combined with technical expertise in specialized areas of the field.
Specialization tracks available:
WSU’s student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers provides valuable opportunities to interact and network with civil engineering professionals through monthly meetings and regional or national conferences. The WSU chapter has won numerous awards in concrete canoe and bridge building contests at national ASCE competitions.
The environmental engineering club, made up of the student chapters of the Water Environment Foundation and the Air and Waste Management Association, is an academic, professional, and social club for students interested in a career in environmental engineering. The group works to promote student and public interest in environmental engineering and environmental issues through public outreach, conferences, and seminars.
The WSU student chapter of Engineers Without Borders does community-based, sustainable engineering projects around the world.
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has an active chapter on campus.
When choosing housing arrangements, the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture strongly encourages incoming freshmen to sign up for Stephenson Complex, which offers a living-learning community for students interested in science, engineering, and mathematics.
WSU Cougs are creators, innovators, builders, and authors. We are motivators, self starters, and scholars. We look to the stars while staying down-to-earth. Above all else, we live our lives and pursue our studies with purpose. We are determined to change the world, and we’re not afraid to roll up our sleeves and lead the way.
To advance knowledge through creative research and scholarship across a wide range of academic disciplines.
To extend knowledge through innovative educational programs in which emerging scholars are mentored to realize their highest potential and assume roles of leadership, responsibility, and service to society.
To apply knowledge through local and global engagement that will improve quality of life and enhance the economy of the state, nation, and world.
Globally recognized programs and faculty
WSU's programs are ranked among the best nationally and internationally in the fields of engineering, computer science, hospitality, business, and many more. WSU students learn from faculty and researchers who are leaders in their fields. Eight WSU faculty are recognized as National Academy members - one of the highest honors given to faculty at U.S. higher education institutions.
Learn by doing
WSU places a strong emphasis on learning by doing and encourages students to apply their knowledge in the real world. Students can launch their own businesses through the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies; learn to use tools such as 3D printers and plasma cutters in the Frank Innovation Zone; or create their own television shows at WSU's Cable 8 Productions. Students in every major have opportunities to gain practical experience that can eventually lead to Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment at competitive, U.S.-based international companies.
Honors College
The Honors College prepares top students in all majors for influential careers. The curriculum lets students choose among dozens of specialized classes in place of required general education courses. Class sizes are typically capped at 25 students. A thesis project allows students to conduct mentored research, exploring an academic question of importance to them. The College attracts top students from across the United States and around the world. Honors alumni have distinguished records of leadership.
