Infection Biology is a growing field within biology that combines immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, and cell biology. Research and education within this field are important in order to better understand and control various types of infectious diseases in the future.

About The Program

The two-year master’s program in Infection Biology at the University of Skövde has been developed in close cooperation with businesses working within bioscience and the biotechnology sector. This ensures that you will gain the knowledge demanded within the labor market.

Constituent courses in the study program

On the two-year master’s program in Infection Biology, you will learn about the molecular mechanisms and processes involved in the pathogenesis of various microorganisms, as well as the molecular and cellular process of immune defense. You will study the structure of genes and proteins, as well as our understanding of their function and regulation. The initial focus will be on advanced courses in molecular biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, and infection biology. Independent, extensive laboratory work is an important part of these studies. Techniques such as qPCR, cloning, cell cultivation, and protein expression are used alongside computer-based molecular biology and bioinformatics tools to analyze DNA, RNA, and proteins. You will then continue with advanced courses in systems biology, expression analysis, multivariate analysis, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and infection biology.

Your studies will conclude with a master’s degree project (45 credits) carried out at a business or an educational institution, either in Sweden or abroad. You will apply your new knowledge during your degree project, working independently to solve topical, relevant research problems within systems biology.

The main focus of the program is on the analysis of experimental biological data.

All teaching is conducted in English.

The researchers at the University of Skövde want to contribute to making changes. That is why our research efforts are carried out in tight collaboration with our community. Furthermore, the research has a clear connection to the education at the university.

Our aim is that the university's research should make a difference locally, nationally as well as internationally. The share of the research that receives external funds is 66% (2019), and our principal contributors are KK-stiftelsen (The Knowledge Foundation), the EU, the Region Västra Götaland, and private companies.

The University of Skövde has five research fields. Three of these are Systems Biology, Informatics, and Virtual Engineering. These three form the foundation for INFINIT. The university's joint theme of Digitalization for Sustainable Development should always be integrated into all research projects and environments to the greatest extent possible.
