BSc - Bachelor of Physics
The bachelor’s degree in physics offers general teaching in physics in terms of its theoretical and experimental aspects. Level L2 (orientation cycle) aims to give students the general fundamentals of physics as well as those of related disciplines such as mathematics while keeping the door open to other disciplines, particularly mechanics, electronics, and chemistry. During L2, a change of direction toward the subject areas of electronics, mechanics or chemistry are possibles. Level L3 (specialization cycle) concerns the different aspects of current physics while allowing students to refine their professional plans and studies. Through the six types of study programmes, a choice is offered between fundamental physics, applied teaching, bi-disciplinary or multidisciplinary studies centered around physics. In L3, a work placement is obligatory in a laboratory or an academic setting in a secondary school.
Opportunities
Further studies Master’s in physics, sciences of the universe, environment, ecology, (SDUEE), engineering sciences (SDI), sciences and management.
Professional integration - Preparation for competitive exams for recruitment into teaching
Entry into certain engineering schools on the basis of previous qualifications.
Organization
At level L2 Three kinds of the curriculum are possible. Fundamental physics and general physics and applications (PF/PGA)
This consists of teaching units (UE) in wave physics, thermodynamics, mathematics, electromagnetism and computer science for physics. Physics and chemistry (PC)
This bi-disciplinary course in physics and chemistry includes TUs in wave physics, thermodynamics, mathematics for physics and chemistry, electromagnetism, computer science for physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry. Multi-disciplinary programme (semester 1) and physics applied to the sciences of life and the planet (semester 2) (PSVP)
Multi-disciplinary curriculum that includes TUs in wave physics, biophysics applications of thermodynamics, molecular and genetic bases of biodiversity, chemistry, spectroscopy, electromagnetism, mathematics for physicists, according to the option is chosen.
At level L3 Four kinds of programmes and two programmes shared with the ENS of Cachan and Ulm. Fundamental physics Quantum physics, electromagnetism, statistical physics, mathematics for physicists, notions of electronics, work placement in a laboratory, experimental project. General physics and applications Electromagnetism, thermodynamics, quantum physics, electronics, mathematics for physicists, work placement in a laboratory, experimental project. Physics and chemistry, following L2-PC Quantum and atomic phenomena, statistical thermodynamics, electromagnetism, molecular chemistry, mathematics for physics and chemistry, an experimental project for the CAPES exam or a master’s degree in physics, experimental physics or chemistry, work placement in a laboratory or in an academic establishment. Physics applied to the sciences of life and the planet; following L2 (PSVP)
Electromagnetic phenomena, balanced thermodynamics, transport phenomena, introduction to the quantum world, computer science, statistics and, at your choice, biophysics, environmental sciences, geophysics, biological and medical imaging. Physics, theory, experiment and model (PHYTEM), with ENS Cachan Quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, states of matter, statistical physics, electronics and information processing, optics and lasers, cohesion of matter, experimental physics, work placement introduction to research. Inter-university teaching in physics (FIP), with ENS Ulm Quantum mechanics, statistical physics, balanced and unbalanced thermodynamics, relativity and electromagnetism, mathematics for physicists, experimental projects.
Well-targeted public – Students who wish to change direction toward research or teaching in physics.
– Students who wish to practice a technical profession or a profession in research and development.
– Students who have done a programme of study appropriate for the first year of university (L1).
– The multi-disciplinary L2 PSVP and L3 PSVP are intended to accept students who have come from the first year in medicine, de preparatory classes, L1, a biology, geology, physics, chemistry programme (BGPC) or L2 in life sciences.
In 2009, UPMC celebrated both the rehabilitation of the Zamansky tour and nine centuries of university activity on the site of the Saint Victor Abbey, renowned as a center of the Western intellectual renaissance, with a famous library and a training center for clerics.
This school, founded by Guillaume de Champeaux in 1109 , played a major role in the intellectual effervescence of the Latin Quarter for several centuries.
Grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, music, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and even technology were all taught there.
After the Revolution, the site was occupied by various warehouses, then the “halle aux vins”, before being reintegrated into the world of research as a part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris in 1959.
Under André Malraux’s leadership, the decision on the Albert project and the tower were made in 1963. And nine hundred years later, UPMC continues the quest for knowledge of the highest order in the heart of Paris.
Faculties and institutes UPMC is composed of seven departments and faculties : chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics, life sciences, earth sciences, environment, and biodiversity.
It also boasts an engineering school - Polytech'Paris UPMC, the Paris Astrophysics Institute, the Henri Poincaré Institute and 3 marine stations at Roscoff, Banyuls, and Villefranche-sur-Mer that have Universe sciences observatory (OSU) status.
Within the faculty of mathematics is ISUP, the premier school of statistics in France.
UPMC and the Val-d'Oise Yvelines chamber of commerce came together to create the first apprenticeship training body within a university framework: CFA UPMC.
