Healthcare is the largest industry in the United States and the second largest employer. The Bachelor of Science in Public and Community Health at Murray State University is a dynamic major that is interdisciplinary in nature and provides options that allow students to prepare for various careers in public and community health organizations, such as hospitals, governmental agencies, non-profits, and worksite wellness programs. These programs prepare students to sit for professional certifications/licensures as well as for graduate studies in related fields.

Many of the skill and knowledge sets mentioned above are required by all employers. This allows public and community health graduates to uniquely create their own career path and capitalize on their strengths, interests and unique qualities and to market themselves towards employment. Self-awareness is the key to understanding what type of opportunity you are most suited towards. Your preferred career future may change over time as your life roles change, develop new and enhance existing skill and knowledge sets and engage in lifelong learning such as professional development, networking and work shadowing activities.

Depending on which area you have studied, this will equip you to enter graduate employment within a specialized area. Here you will find traditional business disciplines such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, and Computer Information Systems as well as Economics, Journalism and Mass Communications, Organizational Communication and Leadership, and Computer Science.

Second, we believe in hands on learning. From our new finance classrooms to the Murray State News, to partnering in research and projects with faculty and community businesses, our students have many opportunities to apply outside the classroom what they are learning inside the classroom.

Finally, we are committed to students’ success in careers and community service. We work with the Murray State Career Service office as well as business and government agencies to help our students start their careers. Many of our students participate in internships, community service and outreach activities, and professional activities while at Murray State.
