The Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics offers a high-quality education meeting the instructional and professional needs of our students, nurturing in them an appreciation of mathematics, abstraction, rigor, and justification.

The degree prepares our students for mathematically related careers in education, government, and the private sector, as well as for graduate studies in mathematics. Students choose from three concentrations: Applied Mathematics, Applied Mathematics with Computer Science, and Pure Mathematics.

Applied Mathematics Concentration

The Applied Mathematics concentration focuses on mathematical tools used in other disciplines. Specifically, students will gain an understanding and experience with the practical applications of differential equations, numerical analysis, and operations research. Coursework includes core Mathematics courses as well as required courses from Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics.

Applied Mathematics with Computer Science Concentration

The Applied Mathematics with Computer Science concentration provides students with a thorough understanding of the key principles of computing and the application of those principles. The curriculum combines both core Mathematics courses with coursework in Computer and Information Science. Students who complete this concentration will demonstrate proficiency in programming using a high-level language, a clear understanding of data structures and algorithms, and knowledge of several programming language paradigms.

Pure Mathematics Concentration

Typically chosen by students planning to pursue graduate studies in Mathematics, the Pure Mathematics concentration focuses on key concepts in geometry, abstract algebra, and real analysis or topology.

The Mansfield University of Pennsylvania Welcomes You! Founded in 1857, Mansfield University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college with the resources of a comprehensive public university. We currently enroll about 2000 students who can choose from 40-degree programs and 47 minor programs . Our student-to-faculty ratio is 16:1. Because of our small size, our students receive individual attention and work closely with their professors on research and other projects. Outside of the classroom, students can choose from more than 100 campus clubs and organizations and participate in intramural sports or join our athletic teams.
