BSc (Hons) Equine Science Degree
The three-year full-time degree programme has been carefully designed to enable students to develop appropriate scientific skills and knowledge to prepare for a career in scientific support and management of the performance horse.
The BSc (Hons) Equine Science has access to excellent teaching facilities across all subject areas, with the Equine Centre and laboratories playing a pivotal role.
Teaching and Learning
Our excellent learning resources will enable you to develop riding and husbandry skills in Year 1, through to using the laboratory resources for your dissertation in Year 3. For example, a Year 3 student recently completed a study analyzing stress levels in horses being trained by conventional methods and those of more modern methods. Year 1 students also work collaboratively with Year 3 BSc Equine Studies students to manage an inter-college event each year.
Optional units in Year 3 will enable you to choose a study path appropriate to your career needs with a focus on equine science subjects including Equine Exercise Physiology and Equine Genetics.
Delivery of the course is complemented by a range of visits to studs, sports horse centers and veterinary centers with guest speakers in nutrition, physiotherapy, genetics, exercise science and other subjects.
An international study tour is invaluable in widening your awareness of the equine industry, as well as being great fun and a chance to get to know your fellow students better.
Assessment Methods and Research Opportunities
Tutorial support throughout your programme of study will help you to develop your skills and knowledge, using a varied range of assessments, including case studies, seminars, investigative reports, and practical sessions.
