Bachelor of Arts in Religion: Leadership and Ethics
Welcome to the Carson-Newman School of Religion web page. Our school offers a rich and diverse selection of degree emphases that range from the basic Religion major to a major with one of the following emphases: biblical languages, biblical studies, church recreation and youth ministry, ministry, philosophy and religion, leadership and ethics, pastoral ministry, and spirituality and the arts.
Our school embraces an identity that reflects our Baptist heritage and what is best in an ideal liberal arts background. The key trajectories that shape our mission and persona include the following:
Faculty will enable the student to develop a theological and philosophical literacy; improve critical reading, writing, and thinking skills; establish a biblical foundation and competency to address life questions and issues in the 21st century; nurture a robust spirituality; create a sense of mission, social consciousness, and global citizenship; and prepare for commitment and leadership in the local church.
Our school is in the process of developing international opportunities to study during the summers in theological settings and institutions on five different continents. These satellites will offer degree credit hours, a cross-cultural experience, and hands-on social and mission opportunities. Most of our professors have international experience and have taught in mission settings, institutions, and seminaries in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Vincovci, Croatia, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Oxford, England, Belfast, Ireland, Sapporo, Japan, Nairobi, Kenya, Leon, Mexico, St. Petersburg, Russia, Cape Town, South Africa, Madrid, Spain, and Merida, Venezuela, and /or led archeological and bible expeditions to Israel, Jordan, and Turkey.
Along with the in-depth teaching, Carson-Newman Religion majors benefit from professors who often become mentors, welcoming their students with an open-door policy. Our faculty is committed to sharing their life experiences and living out the imitatio Christi. Every one of our faculty is involved in ministry and the local church on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Our Religion graduates are accepted at the finest theological seminaries in the country from Princeton to Duke and Wake Forest to McAfee. Baptist seminaries applaud the theological caliber of the Carson-Newman students who attend institutions like Baptist Seminary at Richmond, Beeson, Campbell, Gardner Webb, Golden Gate, Palmer, Southeastern, Southern, Southwestern, and Truett.
If you are up for the challenge and seeking a Religion degree that is biblically centered, linguistically advanced, philosophically engaging, spiritually demanding, and if you desire to walk with mentors and professors who combine the pursuit of excellence with a vital Christian faith – then the lecture rooms and halls of the Carson-Newman School of Religion are waiting for you.
