The general MBA program is a 36 credit hour program, including nine credit hours of electives. Students who pursue the MBA with a Human Resources concentration are required to take the 9 elective hours in employment law, growing and developing talent, and HR management coursework. Students selecting this concentration often have a management background or an undergraduate degree in HR, management, or general business administration. Graduates from this program are well suited to become managers of human resources departments or advance their HR management careers. Example topics include: performance management, employee development, private and public sector employment law, labor relations, employment discrimination, international variations, unions, and public policy.

History and Traditions

In 1886, founding president David Bancroft Johnson successfully petitioned Boston philanthropist Robert C. Winthrop and the Peabody Fund for seed money to form a training school for teachers. Winthrop opened its doors to 21 students in Columbia, S.C., using a borrowed, one-room building. The school soon received state assistance and moved to its permanent Rock Hill home in 1895. It expanded its mission over time to become a comprehensive institution. Winthrop assumed university designation in 1992.
