The Management Department at U.S.C. focuses on such areas as entrepreneurship, strategic management, human resources, business communication, business ethics, and organizational behavior. The Department offers majors in human resources and entrepreneurship as well as a broad range of courses in areas ranging from strategic management to business communication.
To support our educational mission, the Management Department relies heavily on the Faber Center for Entrepreneurship, the Riegel & Emory Human Resource Center, theCenter for Executive Succession, and theCenter for Business Communication. These centers work to support research activities, promote links between U.S.C. and the business community, and build competencies and skills among both undergraduate and graduate students.
Students in the Darla Moore School of Business who wish to major in Management may choose from a concentration in the Human Resources area or a concentration in Entrepreneurship. These majors are designed to help students develop competencies and skills relevant across a broad range of organizational roles, as well as roles specifically involving human resources or entrepreneurship.
Class Profile: Graduates find positions throughout organizational structures in both general management and specific functional areas.
The Program: Management focuses on organizations-their design, function and management, behavior in organizations, and how they are changed. Such areas include entrepreneurship, policy, and strategy, human resource management and communication. Integrating themes include leadership, managing change and diversity, ethical behavior, teamwork and the coordination and alignment of functional areas.
Founded in 1801, then-South Carolina College flourished pre-Civil War, overcame post-war struggles, was rechartered in 1906 as a university and transformed itself as a national institution in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The Palmetto State established South Carolina College — the precursor to the University of South Carolina — on Dec. 19, 1801, as part of an effort to unite South Carolinians in the wake of the American Revolution. South Carolina's leaders saw the new college as a way to promote "the good order and harmony" of the state.
The founding of South Carolina College was also a part of the Southern public college movement spurred by Thomas Jefferson. Within 20 years of one another, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia established state-supported colleges.
