The School of Japan Studies offers the opportunity to study and discover Japan comprehensively and from international perspectives.

Sharing ideas and learning together with Japanese and international students makes this program unique. Students can learn and design innovative problem-solving skills for diversified and expanding needs in Japan and the world.

The Tokyo University of Foreign Studies is the oldest institution in Japan that is devoted to international studies. It began as Bansho Shirabesho (Institute for Research of Foreign Documents), a government translation bureau founded in 1856. It was then established as an independent educational and research institution with the name Tokyo Gaikokugo Gakko (Tokyo School of Foreign Languages) in 1899. In 1999, the University celebrated the 100th anniversary of its "independence."

Suburb in the western part of Tokyo. Students belonging to the schools of Language and Culture Studies (1480 students), International and Area Studies (1500 students), and the Graduate School of Global Studies (148 students enroll in the Master's Course and 40 students in the Doctoral Course every year) study about languages and cultures of the world. In addition to this, the campus also holds the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa and the Japanese Language Center for International Students.
