The objectives of this master’s degree are to educate future managers, engineers, and researchers in the field of nanotechnology and give them the tools to handle recent advances in nanotechnology and biology. Graduates will be ready to undertake international projects in which these different fields overlap.
École Centrale de Lyon is the leading institution of this Université de Lyon master’s program, which is accredited jointly with INSA Lyon and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
This degree is a two-year program (Master 1 and 2) built around nanoscience and nanotechnology. It is conducted under the scientific expertise of lecturers and researchers from five major Lyon laboratories: the Lyon Institute of Nanotechnology (INL), the ILM (a nanoscience research center), the MATEIS (materials science laboratory), the LMI (multi-materials and interfaces laboratory) and the ISA (analytical sciences institute).
As a truly international degree, 60% of international students to Centrale Lyon enroll in this master’s and the lessons are given entirely in English . Numerous internationally renowned scientists from outside France also give seminars on their fields of expertise during the year.
Nanoscale objects present extraordinary properties that do not exist at the macroscopic scale. In physics, quantum mechanics comes to the fore, while in the area of fluid mechanics, confinement provokes other laws. Being able to control matter at the nanoscale can allow the creation of devices with particular properties capable of being incorporated into existing devices or opening the field to new engineering applications . Nanoscience is at the vanguard of several disciplines : physics, chemistry, electronics, and biology. It is being harnessed to meet the challenges of tomorrow found in areas covering health, renewable energy, communications, and many other sectors.
École Centrale de Lyon is one of the top 10 engineering schools in France. There are more than 3,000 students from over 50 nationalities, in the engineering science degree, our Master's degrees, and our doctoral programs. Our educational programs are founded on the excellence of our research laboratories, with 6 CNRS-accredited laboratories, 2 international laboratories, 6 international research networks, and 10 joint laboratories with industrial partners.
Our mission: ‘To instill general engineers with a solid scientific and technical background along with a broad world view and the ability to adapt to changing and multi-cultural environments’. Our students will excel in the sciences. They will put them into practice through an open education approach (directed study in labs, practical work, study projects, skills-based approach, internships) and through the teaching of human and social sciences, which are essential for personal development and workplace life.
The energy to embark on new ventures, the strength to act boldly, and the courage and desire to always strive to go further guide our students in their journey to become curious engineers, trained in other fields, and active participants in their own futures.
This is made possible thanks to the many partnerships we have developed with schools and universities in France and abroad. ENISE, which became our institute’s first internal school, is also part of this openness. New opportunities arise every year: from architecture to management, from cooking to craftsmanship, and from pure research to medicine, students have many ways to expand their knowledge.
Businesses are involved at every level of education, ensuring that teaching is tailored as closely as possible to their expectations and to the scientific and societal challenges ahead.
In the wings, the lecturer-researchers and staff contribute to Ecole Centrale de Lyon’s transformation by bringing projects to life. This collaborative dynamic drives us to redesign the institute to offer our students an advantageous environment for these projects, meeting the highest international standards.
New spaces for education, meetings, and research, with an emphasis on intercultural exchanges, easier access to new technologies, and the preservation of our exceptional living environment are just some of the challenges to which we are rising.
