One who studies psychology or neuroscience seeks to understand the complexities and processes of the mind as a pathway to understanding humans’ perceptions, motivations, attitudes, and behaviours. DePauw students who major in psychology or neuroscience take a scientific approach to address physiology, cognitive function, social influence, organizational behaviour, mental disorders, and treatment.
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes approached from physiological, cognitive, behavioural, social, and applied perspectives. Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system and integrates knowledge from biology, chemistry, the cognitive and social sciences, computer science, and allied disciplines. Students in both majors receive training in the scientific approach. It has been applied to studying such topics as the structure and function of the nervous system, perception, learning, motivation, memory, development, social influence, attitudes, organizational behavior, and mental disorders and treatments. Understanding how these topics have been investigated scientifically requires the development of critical thinking skills, quantitative reasoning skills, and speaking and writing abilities necessary to communicate research knowledge to others and an appreciation for the ethical issues involved in research and practice. These skills are developed throughout the curriculum for the Psychology and Neuroscience majors; demonstrated competence in Statistics and Research Methods is essential for success in both study areas. Our majors have successful careers in research, counseling and teaching, medicine, business, journalism, and law.

DePauw is a place that attracts a specific kind of person. A person with many talents and the will to lead. A person who will find success in any role or discipline they seek. We promise small classes, innovative teaching, and an emphasis on free-thinking and dialogue. It's a promise that empowers students to impact the world even before they leave campus. Thirty per cent of DePauw students engage in real-world research with faculty members, and we encourage students to take on two or more internships during their time here. DePauw ranks in the top 10 for producing business executives and Fulbright Scholars. And 94 per cent of our students have a job or plan to attend a graduate, service, or fellowship program before graduation. That's what we call Uncommon Success.
DePauw is a fully residential liberal arts college, which means conversations spillover from the seminar table to the dining hall to the student lounge. Students embark on collaborative adventures with staff and faculty, local community members and alumni, and dorm-room peers, forming lifelong connections and impactful partnerships that often extend into their careers.
