The Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced provides an intensive specialised professional program of study plus the opportunity to specialise in either Ergonomics, Occupational Hygiene or Risk Management.
UOW's Work Health and Safety programs have been developed in conjunction with a wide range of industry sectors to address the complex nature of occupational health and safety in the workplace. The program has a flexible mode of delivery, with online content delivered up front, and block teaching sessions of 3–5 days for exploration and application of subject material. On campus teaching components utilise a range of resources, including the well-equipped OHS Laboratory.
Knowledge and skills development throughout this course will be applied to a research‐based capstone workplace project in the final stage of the degree program. This will give you a high level of evidence-based professional practice in occupational health and safety.
Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to:
Critically analyse and evaluate WHS issues using data, research and argument Develop effective responses to WHS issues with creativity, logic and critical thinking Effectively articulate and convey work health & safety knowledge, skills and ideas to collaborate and engage with people in different settings and different cultural environments Demonstrate awareness and strategies to acknowledge, appreciate and respect diversity Develop strategies to maintain personal integrity within the field of WHS Identify and apply appropriate resources and technologies for professional practice in WHS in order to function effectively in the digital environment Conceptualise key issues and concepts related to a range of contemporary public health sub-disciplines.
The Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced requires the successful completion of at least 96 credit points including:

Students who commence in Spring session must complete the Health Promotion specialisation prior to commencing the core Work Health and Safety subjects.
Year 1
Specialisations are normally commenced after the core requirements are completed. Students commencing in Spring session will complete the requirements for the Health Promotion specialisation first, before completing core requirements and a second specialisation in subsequent sessions. Students wishing to undertake the WHS Research specialisation will normally have completed the core and first specialisation requirements prior to the major project.
The Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced has been accredited by the Australian Occupational Health and Safety Educators Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB). The Occupational Hygiene specialisation has been accredited by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).
Accreditation is being sought from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH)
UOW is home to Work Health and Safety scholars who are leaders in their field. The strong pedagogical basis of the course is informed by a team of experienced teaching staff from a range of professional backgrounds, including allied health, engineering, occupational hygiene and risk management. The multidisciplinary approach to learning and teaching at UOW enables valuable interdisciplinary experience with Public Health and Social Sciences students, and academic input from engineering, medicine, various allied health professionals, law and business.

A recognised 3-year Bachelor degree with a major in a Science or Health-related discipline; or a degree in another relevant area (for example Engineering) which contains at least one year of science-based subjects. Applicants with other relevant qualifications and/or work experience may be considered.
MWHS Adv students commencing in Spring, with no prior credit, must complete the Health Promotion specialisation before commencing their WHS subjects.
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Work Health and Safety will be able to articulate to the Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced. All subjects successfully completed in the Graduate Diploma will count as credit towards the Master of Work Health and Safety Advanced upon successful transfer to the degree.

UOW College: English for Tertiary Studies: Credit (weighted average mark of 65 overall and minimum 50 in Academic Reading and Writing)
