The UMKC School of Medicine enjoys a rich history of innovation in medical education. The Master of Science in Anesthesia (MSA) program was started in 2008 to address a shortage of anesthesia care providers in Missouri and throughout the United States. Ours was the first MSA program west of the Mississippi. Today, we are one of only 12 anesthesiologist assistant programs in the country. With 60 graduates and a 100 percent placement rate, our program produces highly skilled professionals who are an integral component of the anesthesia care team.
The vision for the Master of Science in Anesthesia program is to provide a didactic and clinical environment producing anesthesiologist assistants who are integral components of the Anesthesia Care Team. Our graduates will be driven by compassion and guided by science and sound technical skills producing high quality and competent patient care. The students, graduates and faculty foster the belief of lifelong learning and service through academic endeavors and professional engagement.
The University of Missouri opened a medical school in Kansas City in 1971 to meet the health care needs of Missouri and the nation. Using an alternative approach to medical education from that of the traditional four-year school, the UMKC School of Medicine accepts students directly out of high school for the combined baccalaureate/ Doctor of Medicine program, which allows students to graduate in six years with their medical degree.
The School’s innovative curriculum provides students with early and continuous patient-care experience and fully integrates liberal arts/humanities, basic sciences and clinical medicine. The learning environment de-emphasizes competition and encourages learning through close faculty-student interaction and student partnerships.
