As a student of the Double Master's Programme in Demography and Social Inequality, you benefit from the expertise of two top-ranking universities. You spend one year studying at the University of Cologne and one year at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and will graduate with two master’s degrees: a Master of Science in Sociology: Social Research from the University of Cologne and a Master of Science in Population Studies from the University of Groningen. The programme is integrated into these degree programmes and incorporates courses from both. It is based on recognition of credit points and includes a master's thesis, which you will write during your second year of studies.
In the international master's programme, you focus on demographic change, population dynamics and the challenges faced by modern societies due to increasing life expectancy, decreasing birth rates and migration. You will develop interdisciplinary research skills to analyse social and demographic data to deal with current issues such as ageing, social inequality, family structures, integration and education.
During the programme, you acquire advanced social research methods and tools for analysing data in order to predict individual demographic behaviour and population dynamics. The Economics and Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Cologne ("WiSo Faculty") was founded in 1901 as a business school. Since then she has expanded her sphere of activity to include economics, sociology and politics. Today we have more than a century of experience training new generations of economists, economists, sociologists and political experts. During this time we have developed a tradition of close dialogue with our stakeholders and a focus on scientific research that is of great relevance for the corporate world, economic policy and society. We are in the heart of Europe, in a city that has been a center of international trade and economy for over two thousand years.
