Wind turbine technicians are needed immediately as the wind industry seeks to find qualified workers to service wind farms across the country. Mitchell Technical College's Wind Turbine Technology is well-known in the industry with a history of producing qualified, desirable graduates to fill these jobs. This two-year program allows students to learn about the basics of turbines, mechanics, hydraulics, electronics, and the computer networks that allow the system to communicate. Unique hands-on experiences are available to students as they climb Mitchell Tech’s wind turbine located at the Crow Lake Wind Farm near White Lake, SD. Mitchell Tech is one of only a few schools nationwide to have an operational 1.5 MW wind turbine.
The second year of the program gives graduates experience in composites, motor controls, power generation, SCADA concepts, and more.
A graduate will find employment opportunities in many areas like turbine maintenance, siting, blade manufacturing, and more.
Chartered in 1966, Mitchell Technical College opened in September 1968 as part of a statewide system of four technical colleges. More than 19,000 students have graduated since that time. The College operates under a dual governance system. Policy, hiring, local fees, and operations are decided by the Board of Education of the Mitchell School District 17-2. Tuition and state fees, program approval, and bonding issues are decided by the South Dakota Board of Technical Education. Mitchell Tech enjoys a close relationship with Mitchell and regional communities. There are established advisory committees of community and regional representatives who provide program input and support.
