Why Study This Programme?

UCLan’s MA Criminology programme offers you a flexible approach to developing your skills and knowledge to enhance your employability in this fascinating and growing area of study. Our course covers a wide range of current issues that are the subject of public and policy concern, both in the domestic UK system or globally. This will allow you to develop postgraduate-level analytical and reflective skills and bolster your previous experiences through our comprehensive syllabus.

There are opportunities to choose from a range of specialised option modules that allow you to customise your learning to your own interests and career aspirations. The modules we offer are informed by cutting-edge research conducted by members of staff who possess expert knowledge of Criminology and Criminal Justice. There will also be an opportunity to gain a stand-alone qualification in the exciting and highly sought-after skill of mediation.

We also offer the opportunity to complete a work placement as an additional year of the programme. This placement can provide a learning experience that develops on your academic ability and newly developed skills and knowledge from the first year of the programme. This allows you to enhance your employability and career aspiration through the first-hand experience in the field.

Classes, consisting of small group seminars, are delivered on one day per week (daytime classes), so study can be combined with work or other commitments.

Entry Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree with Honours at lower second class or above (in any discipline) or a professional qualification/experience in criminal justice deemed to be degree equivalent.

  • CJ4011: Theory and Methods in Criminology
  • CJ4012: Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice

Semester 2

Choice of options from the below:

  • CJ4013: Power, Violence and Oppression
  • CJ4014: International Drug Policy
  • CJ4015: The Politics of Prison and Punishment
  • CJ4016: Cybercrime: An International Context
  • LA4504: Transnational Regulation of Human Trafficking
  • LA4608: International Commercial Mediation

Students on the MA Criminology (with Professional Placement) programme will complete this placement in their second year.

D.B.S. Checks

This course will involve access to children and/or vulnerable adults. You will be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed C.R.B.) and we will guide you through this process.

Professional Accreditation

Students on the MA Criminology/ MA Criminology (with Professional Placement) programme will have the opportunity to complete a mediation module which will lead to accreditation by the Civil Mediation Council (C.M.C.).

Learning Environment and Assessment

The programme will be delivered through classroom sessions, forming small group seminars with intimate learning conditions to maximise interaction between students and staff. Assessments will be conducted through a variety of written and oral assessments.

  • Deborah Conroy: Young People and Youth Justice, Drug use in society, The History of the Criminal Justice System
  • Sue Uttley-Evans: Migration, Human Trafficking, Honour-based violence and FGM, Diversity and Justice
  • Dave Orr: History of Policing, State Crime and Genocide, Institutionalised Racism, Critical Criminology
  • Laura Kelly-Corless: Prisons and punishment
  • Abigail Stark: Prisons, Comparative Criminology
  • Tim Owen: Bio-social explanations of crime, cybercrime and new technologies
  • Laura Hughes: Property Law, Equity & Trusts, Immigration Law, Professional Ethics

Opportunities

The Professional Placement programme offers the opportunity to work in the UK or overseas to develop practical knowledge and skills.

Graduates from this programme may go on to professional roles in prisons, probationary services, youth justice, policing, NGOs and voluntary sector organisations, or Woman’s Aid.

Graduates from this programme may also be interested in progressing onto study for a PhD in Criminology.

  • MA Criminology: full time 1 year, part-time 2 years
  • MA Criminology (with Professional Placement): full time 2 years, part-time 3 years

Fees 2019/20

  • Full-time: £6,700 per year (UK/EU)
  • Part-time: £3,350 per year paid over the 2 years of taught classes (UK/EU)

Tuition Fees are per year unless otherwise stated.
