The Social Sciences program is designed to prepare students to become Middle School or High School Social Studies teachers. This comprehensive major focuses on History, Political Science, Anthropology, Economics, Geography, and Psychology. In addition to fostering content competency, it allows students to develop their written and oral communication skills. It generally leads to a Bachelor of Science in Education and state licensure.

Recent graduates of the program are teaching in Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Arizona, but the degree can take students to many places. Teaching is not the only option. Program alumni also pursue graduate study in various fields, and some have gone on to earn commissions in the US Armed Forces. The program also hosts a vibrant Social Sciences Club, the Native American Club, and the opportunity to participate in a study abroad experience in Cuba.

Chadron State College, founded in 1911, is the only four-year, regionally-accredited college in the western half of Nebraska. As a public institution with its roots in teacher education, Chadron State has evolved into a comprehensive college with a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The College chooses to celebrate collaboration and works diligently to create alignment between every department on campus. In fact, alignment is a crucial element of Chadron State 2030, the college’s strategic plans collection. Chadron State 2030 brings together the Master Academic Plan, the Campus Master Plan, and the Chadron State Foundation’s comprehensive campaign. All three work together to create a high-quality learning environment for students and an engaging and rewarding place to live and work.
