Description du programme

For program starting August 2010 only applicants already holding residence permit will now be considered (other deadline expired March 1st)

Program objective(s)

The program aims to broaden your understanding of energy issues, help you develop proficiency in the constructive use of business administrative theory, and leave you with an active attitude towards business administration processes, especially related to the energy sector.

Target group

With oil-and-gas exploration now well underway in the Barents High-North, and with the prospect of more such exploration along the coast of northern Norway, there is an increasing need for skilled professionals in the energy field—people familiar with the peculiarities of the oil-and-gas industries, possessing strong regional knowledge and expertise in energy management, energy diplomacy, and geopolitics.

To meet this challenge, we have designed an innovative program that will prepare students for employment in this intellectually demanding and rapidly growing industry.

Programme description

In the second year of the program, you’ll spend a semester at MGIMO University in Moscow, where you will study Energy Diplomacy and Economy of Fuel and Energy Complex (FEC) industries. The course will provide you with knowledge of organizations, management, and economy of the FEC, transportation systems of energy resources, oil stock exchanges and markets of energy resources, investment activities of foreign oil-and-gas and energy enterprises, information systems, and competitive strategies in the FEC.

The first semester will focus on business administration and management theory, with an emphasis on broadening your understanding of the energy sector’s eclectic nature. It will also help you develop your proficiency in the constructive use of theory at the same time that you develop an active attitude towards business administration processes. And it will emphasize the changing processes in organizations and populations. In addition, you will get to explore some major environmental, philosophical, and ethical issues related to the energy industry.

The second semester will advance your theoretical knowledge in business- and energy-related topics. You will be introduced to newer and more complex theories. The Norwegian context, situated in a global perspective, will be a common theme throughout the semester, as will issues related to world oil markets, government relations, and the environment. You’ll also complete a course on research methods during this semester, which will help prepare you for your thesis work later in the program.

The third semester aims to help you deepen, integrate, and assimilate your new knowledge of theory and method. You will also engage in activities designed to improve your problem-solving skills. While at MGIMO University, you will build analytical and theoretical competence while analyzing key geopolitical and macroeconomic factors affecting the energy industry around the world.

The fourth semester lets you focus on writing and completing your thesis.

Programme structure

The schedule includes one semester abroad as an integral part of the program. Thus you are given a chance to get acquainted with different business cultures and to develop a global mindset. The program includes workshops, lectures, seminars, and group discussions. There will also be visits either at or from energy enterprises and advisory and regulatory institutions in the energy sector from the countries involved, all of which will further afford you a deep, and diversified, insight into the industry.

Form of assessment

Grades are given on a scale from A - F (A-E are passed, F is failed). Diverse forms of evaluation are used papers, casework, presentations and school exams.

Evaluation

The program is evaluated annually based on feedback from the students, both through a continuous dialogue during the term and through a web-based questionnaire at the end of each term.
