Chemistry deals with phenomena that affect nearly every aspect of our lives and environment. A liberal arts education in this scientific and technological age should include some exposure to the theories, laws, applications, and potential of this science.
Majors in chemistry and biochemistry are offered. The chemistry curriculum is sufficiently flexible to allow students with career interests in health professions, law, business, and education to design a major program suitable to their goals. Students interested in chemistry or biochemistry careers will find chemistry electives that provide a strong background for work in graduate school, industry, or other positions requiring a strong foundation in chemistry. The American Chemical Society (ACS) approved the department and its curriculum, and an ACS-certified major is offered.
Since its founding in 1855, Bates College has welcomed men and women from diverse racial, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.
A private, highly selective, residential college devoted to undergraduate study in the liberal arts, Bates has always stood firmly for the ideals of academic rigour, intellectual curiosity, egalitarianism, social justice and freedom. Bates is recognized for its inclusive social character and progressive tradition and is rightly celebrated as one of the first U.S. institutions of higher learning to admit women and people of colour.
All activities, resources, and facilities have always been open to all members of the Bates community. Bates does not believe in — and has never allowed on campus and will never allow — organizations such as fraternities or sororities that exclude people.
