Southern Technical College provides hands-on quality education in their Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technician program. Surgical Technician students will learn about the surgical profession and will develop the fundamental concepts and principles (aseptic technique) necessary to successfully participate on a surgical team. The topics will include an introduction to preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative principles of surgical technology, and an introduction to intraoperative pharmacology and the concepts of anesthesia administration utilized in the surgical environment. In addition, basic surgical furniture, equipment and supplies are presented. The student will be able to identify by name, the common equipment and surgical supplies including suture, needles, drains, catheters and dressing and discuss when and why these devices are necessary. The anatomy and physiology of the major systems are covered, with emphasis on the digestive system, integumentary system musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular and reproductive system. This program will also address the surgical wound, various incisions, suture material the wound healing process and how to handle specimens. Before graduation students will spend 500 total hours in two externships, working with a surgical team.
