Chemistry that explains and unravels molecules that make up substances. Biotechnology that delves into gene-modification and fermentation utilizing the vital functions of living organisms. Deepening understanding of these two categories, students learn about the chemistry that can be applied to environmental issues and life, such as aqueous environments and cosmetics. Experiments in basic chemistry and biology are incorporated into each 1st and 2nd-year curriculum themed on the analysis of water, microorganisms, and cells. The most up-to-date experiment and research equipment such as DNA analysis devices and gene-modification experiment rooms and equipment including electronic microscopes and mass spectroscopes prepare students for the future. We develop human resources who will play an active role in research involving pharmaceutical products, foods, cosmetics, the environment, and the manufacturing industry.
At the end of World War II, with much of Japan lying in ruins from multiple airstrikes and particularly with the hydrogen bomb dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, our founder, Mr. Tsutomu Kake (1923 – 2008) came to the realization that because this country has few natural resources only through education can Japan recover. From that point on and throughout the rest of his life, Mr. Kake had been actively involved in the development of education in Japan.
The spirit espoused by Mr. Kake: "To draw out each and every youth’s abilities to their maximum potential, and to educate individuals to contribute to society as skilled professionals and as members of their communities." He established the Okayama University of Science to combine the ideals of academic thinking and high-mindedness from 1964 to the present day.
