The LL.M in American Law for Foreign Lawyers program consists of a full course of study over two semesters from August to May. To meet the needs of the international LLM student, the College of Law offers specialized courses in U.S. legal education and U.S. legal writing, analysis and methodology for the international lawyer.
Students will complete an additional six to eight classes and will receive advice and guidance in their course selection. Students are invited to choose from any of the many elective courses offered by TU College of Law and the other graduate departments of The University of Tulsa.
In addition, the program offers foreign lawyers the opportunity to develop an understanding of American law as well as an opportunity to specialize in a specific area of law, such as international business law. Students of the program enjoy greater employment flexibility in their own countries, as well as the possibility to practice law in states that allow foreign lawyers to sit for the bar examination.
The LLM degree requires candidates to successfully complete a minimum 24 credits.
The Program begins on campus mid-August of each year, and all students are required attend a multi-day “Foundations of Legal Studies” orientation before classes begin.
The University of Tulsa has its roots in the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, a small boarding school in Muskogee, Indian Territory, which was founded in 1882. In 1894, at the request of the Synod of Indian Territory, the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church elevated the academy’s status and chartered it as Henry Kendall College, a name that honored the first general secretary of the Home Missions Board. The first classes in the new college were held on Sept. 12, 1894.
Today, TU operates as an independent, nondenominational university. A top-rated research institution, the university welcomes students from many different faiths and countries. The TU campus fosters a rich, diverse experience for students and faculty regardless of religious or cultural background through a strong belief in mutual respect and understanding.
