Biology (B.S.)
Bloomsburg University's Bachelor of Science in Biology program provides a rigorous background in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. The program meets the needs of students who plan to enter graduate or professional school in the natural sciences and of those seeking employment in the private sector and government agencies. Biology (B.S.) students may choose to specialize, electing an option in environmental biology, molecular biology, or pre-medical sciences (pre-med).
Biology (B.S)
This degree provides a strong background in the biological sciences and the chemistry, physics, and math working biologists need. The biology requirements and electives allow students to explore the many sub-disciplines in biology and provide a broad preparation for graduate study and employment.
Biology (B.S) - Environmental Biology
This degree provides a strong background in the biological sciences and chemistry, physics, geology, and math working environmental biologists need. The requirements and electives are tailored to develop skills in ecology, field biology, and environmental sciences. This program prepares students for careers in environmental protection, natural resource management, and conservation with state and federal agencies and conservation organizations.
Biology (B.S) - Pre-Medical Sciences
This degree provides outstanding preparation for medical, veterinary, optometry, podiatry, chiropractic, and dental schools. Students completing this program have an over 90 percent acceptance rate to professional schools. Students in this major work closely with the Pre-Professional Committee to meet the requirements for professional study.
Biology (B.S) - Molecular Biology
This degree provides a strong background in the biological sciences and the chemistry, physics, and math working biologists need. The biology requirements and electives are tailored to develop skills in molecular biology and biotechnology. This program prepares students for careers with biotechnology companies; it is also excellent preparation for work in forensics labs.
GlaxoSmithKline co-op provides valuable hands-on experience
MacKenzie McDowell, a biology major and chemistry minor, is currently at the halfway mark of her six-month co-op in the Protein and Cellular Sciences Department at GlaxoSmithKline in Upper Providence. Her work focuses primarily in the area of protein purification. This opportunity has allowed her to apply her knowledge of Cell Biology and Biochemistry 1 and 2 in the research and development laboratories. McDowell has gained expertise with a variety of instruments and techniques such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, automated protein purification systems, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, protein digestion, Western blot analysis, and plasmid preps.
