The School of Life Science offers a variety of subjects in the fields of nutrition science for health enhancement and management, architecture for living environment, and biology for the regional environment. Our laboratory investigates regulatory mechanisms of immune-cell trafficking (adhesion and migration). Adhesion molecules integrins play important roles in lymphocyte homing to peripheral lymphoid organs and leukocyte migration through the inflamed endothelium, and adhesive interactions to antigen-presenting cells. We identified small GTPase Rap1 as a crucial regulator of integrin-dependent cell attachment and migration during these processes. We further clarified the Rap1 signaling pathway to integrins, which abnormal regulation led to a breakdown of self-tolerance due to impaired thymocyte selections and regulatory T cells development and functions. Combined with mice models of immune diseases, we are developing various tissue imaging methods and pursuing therapeutic strategies of intractable immune diseases by controlling immune cell adhesion.

Laboratory animals are also essential for understanding biological activities and for the development of food additives and pharmaceutical products. In the School of Animal Science, the domains of learning and research comprise three major pillars. In the “Animal Resource Science” domain, students acquire and practice technical knowledge and techniques of animal production through specializations such as grassland science, nutritional science, and theory of livestock for milk and meat, while experiencing practical animal care at the farm. In the “Animal Bio Science” domain, students acquire and practice biotechnology (including protein analysis, genetic analysis, and cell culture), which has been developed in each field of study, and cultivates a better understanding of cell function and life activities. And there is the “Social Science of Animals” domain, which is related to agricultural food systems which handle everything from food production to consumption, social science investigations of cities and agricultural villages, and wildlife. The major feature of this school is that it includes “Social Science of Animals” as a pillar of study, and it is possible to do research systematically from the process of keeping and feeding industrial animals to their distribution, processing, sale and consumption, step by step.

The Earth is home to a great variety of animal life. The Department of Animal Bioscience was created in the 2009 academic year with the goal of training students to be able to contribute to humankind, for example by understanding the mechanisms by which animals live, conducting research into health and longevity, elucidating disease, and evaluating the safety of drug discovery and food products. In addition to studying the latest bioscience developments at the most basic genetic, molecular, and cellular levels, students of the Department develop an ability to understand and research animals in a comprehensive and multifaceted manner by learning about subjects such as individual animals' physiology and behavior, pathology, embryo engineering, and bioethics. They also have the opportunity to interact with experimental animals during lab work, and they learn how to properly manage animals from the standpoint of animal protection and welfare. By earning credits in the appropriate subjects, students can also earn certification as a food hygiene manager or food hygiene observer, both of which roles concern the assurance of food safety.
