How machines can work in harmony with people? Harmony between people and the environment, and not just the creation of “things,” will be required of manufacturing in the future. From this viewpoint, students in our machine design course will learn through hands-on experience the basics of designing and manufacturing by acquiring the necessary knowledge and techniques related to machine elements, mechanical mechanics, material engineering, and machining processes. The Department of Sculpture was launched in 1887 with the establishment of a sculpture course as a specialist program. This was later expanded into a plastic arts department in 1899. With the school’s transformation into Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku in the 1949 educational reforms, the department once again became the Department of Sculpture. The current sculpture building on the Ueno Campus was built in 1971, and the doctoral program was established in 1977. Educational philosophy: The Department of Sculpture stresses the importance of developing highly sensitive graduates capable of developing a vision for the future of art from a broad-ranging, global perspective, based on the history of art to date and the traditions of Japanese art. It attempts to instill this perspective by focusing on a broad-ranging study of the plastic arts and seeks to cultivate graduates capable of working as creative artists, as well as providing instruction in various arts-related areas. In the master’s degree program, students are supported by and work within a unique educational structure based on studios tailored to each student’s research goals. Research in this field aims at the actualization of information systems that focus primarily on the “human element” rather than on just sending and receiving information. Students can learn how to skillfully develop information systems, and how to pursue effective processes to ensure performance and safety.

Established with the aim of fostering human resources with advanced knowledge and skills in the fields of art and design, the Master's Degree Program was the first to be officially approved at a private art university in Japan in 1964. The Master's Degree Program encompasses five majors. In addition to Painting, Sculpture, and Design, the Art Studies major was installed in 1998, followed by Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works in 2002. The distinct class system with one-on-one tutelage by subject teachers continuing from the undergraduate course aims to improve expertise in the respective fields. Regarding expressive results as artworks, students work to further improve their skills and techniques and carry out research. They think about what artistic expression means in contemporary society and pursue their own themes and methods as expressive mediums. They strive to explore their own artistic visions and potential and establish personal themes while thinking about connections with society.

Through education and research in the fields of architectural planning and theory, architectural design, architectural environment and equipment, traditional wooden architecture, and structural engineering in architecture, we cultivate talent who can contribute to the realization of comfortable urban and residential spaces by pursuing harmony between the characteristics of individual architecture and the concepts of urban and community planning. In the Department of Environmental Design, you will study environmental studies related to the future creation of the region, such as living environment, living and water, resource energy, biomass, environmental risk assessment, and environmental policy, and also practically learn international understanding through overseas activities. I aim to be an environmental science professional who understands the movements of the world and Japan and can see the future of the area where I live from the perspective of the world.

DHU utilizes diversifying media from web to videos to develop designers who can succeed in a wide-ranging field by learning the technique of design expression, planning, and the designs for increasing product value.

The Graduate School of Architecture has five divisions in the master’s degree program, and four divisions in the doctoral degree program. Architects have always striven to create architectural designs realizing the connection between society, nature, and living spaces. Our courses are designed to provide students with both professional architectural skills and a strong sense of creativity. In order to obtain a master’s degree in the subject, students have the option of writing a thesis or creating and presenting an architectural design.
