WGS DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The study of women has been part of the GVSU curriculum since 1973 when courses were taught in the College of Arts and Sciences and in William James College. The minor in Women's Studies was approved in 1986 and the first Women's Studies minor graduated in 1988. In 1997, the program was significantly expanded to include the study of gender. Women and Gender Studies became a major in 2006. In fall of 2013, a new minor in LGBTQ Studies was launched. With the study of sexuality added to curriculum, the program name was changed to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGS) in 2015. The WGS Department is housed in the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies.

The Department endeavors to develop the following qualities in our students as they relate to the college’s mission and objectives: Our students will develop an understanding of how past events, ideas, and people can have a lasting legacy on current and future courses of history, as well as to develop their capacity to logically express those thoughts through effective communication skills.

A degree with many applications, the Social Science Bachelor of Science from UD is designed to prepare you with a fundamental understanding of two major courses of study—social sciences and either history, political science, psychology, or sociology.

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees with majors in Social Sciences are interdisciplinary degrees meant to prepare the graduate with a general foundation across the social sciences and the experience of deeper inquiry in at least two areas of study in the social sciences. For these degrees, the social sciences include history, political science, psychology, and sociology.
