The political science major has five concentrations: politics, global politics, law and politics, political economy and economic policy, and American politics.

International Relations Major

Michigan State University International Studies and Programs

logo Michigan State University International Studies and Programs

United States of America (USA)

Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations

Bachelor's Degree

The outstanding features of the curriculum are its breadth and depth. It is organized around the following themes: international security and conflict resolution; international political economy; global governance; foreign policy of the United States and other countries; and comparative, regional and cultural studies. The International Relations curriculum encourages students to think creatively about a variety of issues: What constitutes "national security"? What are the social consequences of modernization? What are the causes and likely consequences of ethno-nationalism? How does the U.S. arrive at foreign policy decisions? How is that different from how foreign policies are made in other countries and which is better? What is the impact of protectionist foreign trade policies? How do national, regional and international political, social, and economic actors interact in the transition to a post-cold war global order? What is the impact of the U.N. and other international organizations? What effects do weapons and communications technologies have on world politics? By what means have national defense policies been implemented since the end of World War II. Some classes will use case studies in which students will be examining real or hypothetical foreign policy dilemmas and developing solutions to them. Others will evidence the importance of theories and models for comprehending and influencing world events.

Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy Major

Michigan State University James Madison College

logo Michigan State University James Madison College

United States of America (USA)

Social Sciences, Political Science

Bachelor's Degree

James Madison College's major in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy, as its unusual name suggests, probes the major competing principles that have animated political communities and how we have attempted to translate these into practice. We raise complex fundamental questions as we try to sort out the values and principles that have been most important to us. What does it mean to flourish as a human being? What are the rights and responsibilities of good citizens? What is the best way of life for society as a whole? Political Theory does not pretend to have the definitive answers to these questions. But we do think we can teach students how to think about these concepts and how to approach these questions in a productive and intellectually exciting way.

The program also acknowledges the central importance of a variety of additional influences on well-being beyond income, such as gender, racial and ethnic disparities, health status, education, human rights, political freedoms, and material necessities like food and shelter. A key goal of the PJHC is to enrich students’ understanding of poverty and inequality so that, regardless of their choice of occupation, they will maintain a longstanding commitment to enhancing the well-being of all people.
