In the German language course of our school, we have developed diverse lessons and seminars on German-speaking countries in order to cultivate learners who understand German-speaking countries from the standpoints of both communication and culture.

The study of history is an academic discipline that seeks to provide narratives of the past by examining diverse historical materials from the perspective of the individual historian. Students develop the ability to read and understand historical documents, grasp the issues of the contemporary world from a historical perspective and comprehend the meaning that past events have for the modern world.

Within the major of Global Business and Economics, the course offerings allow students to choose between a more applied (Global Business) emphasis and a more social-science oriented (Economics) emphasis. Both are embedded in a liberal arts approach that stresses the humane point of view, criticality, social responsibility, and intellectual depth. Questions concerning government policies aimed at achieving economic stability and growth, the gap between the rich and poor, the role of NGOs to affect social and political change, the relations between countries, the crisis of our democratic institutions, and the world peace are all on the research agenda of contemporary political scientists. The general purpose of the major is to address these and other similar important issues in a multidisciplinary way, and, simultaneously, to expose students to think critically and reason analytically about the constantly evolving political landscape in Asia compared to the rest of the world.

The Faculty of Foreign Languages aims to nurture a workforce that can utilize high language proficiency. Our faculty encourages you to be successful in society, such as the international business world with high communication skills in English or in educational organizations with linguistic ability and leadership. Students are required to serve at least two years in a Japanese-speaking church as partial fulfillment of their Christian Ministry and Field Education requirements (exceptions may be permitted in special cases). Students are strongly encouraged, therefore, to continue their study of the Japanese language beyond the first two years of required coursework.

In the Department of English, our students gain practical English abilities and strive toward their next horizons. To expand their worlds through English and cultivate knowledge and culture, 1st- and 2nd-year students focus on increasing their English abilities.

Buddhist Studies is an academic discipline that studies the Buddhist understanding of human existence and proposes how humanity can live together in harmony. The students in this department study all aspects of Buddhism, including its philosophy, history, and culture, with the aim of developing their sensibilities to observe and empathize with others.

Students study and have personal experience of Japanese history, thought, religion, art, etc., in order to understand Japanese culture as one's own inheritance and source of being. By becoming aware of the source of one's personality, students can deepen their understanding of international society and different cultures.

The Minor Course for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language in SU began in 1988. More than 30 graduates who completed this course, including overseas students, have taken Japanese language teacher jobs in Japanese language institutions in Japan and overseas.

The Department of Japanese Literature and Culture offers a curriculum with numerous elective courses that students can choose according to their interests. The courses include classical and modern literature, traditional culture, theater, movies, and animation.

The Department offers courses in various fields of Buddhism, ranging from China to Japan, from the earliest days of Zen Buddhism to the present, and from its teachings and philosophy to its arts.

In addition to acquiring expertise, specialized skills, and techniques in various sciences such as humanities, anthropology, society, regional studies, and information, students gain an accurate understanding of regional issues and various issues of globalized modern society through combined specialized fields of learning.
