Program Description

The Master of Arts in Counseling is designed to prepare students for a variety of careers. Training is provided by skilled professors and courses in a wide spectrum of subjects, including:

  • Career Counseling
  • Child and Adolescent Counseling
  • Grief/Loss/Trauma Counseling
  • Marriage and Family Counseling
  • Mental Health Counseling
  • Multicultural Counseling
  • Rehabilitation Counseling
  • School Counseling
  • Substance Abuse Counseling

There are four clinical strands embedded into the Counseling Program: 1) Mental Health Counseling, 2) School Counseling, 3) Substance Abuse Counseling, and 4) Rehabilitation Counseling. The final two of these strands must be completed along with the Clinical Mental Health Master’s degree, this allows students in the 3rd and 4th strands to qualify for two licenses.

All four programs require students to complete 60 credit hours of course work (see degree plans) as well as 700 hours of practicum/internship. Students are responsible for determining placement for practicum/internship. Students pursuing their degree out of state are strongly advised to check with the respective state licensure boards to ensure that our WNMU program meets the requirements of that state. All of the MS programs in counseling can be completed entirely online, although some classes are synchronous, meaning that they necessitate students to attend classes via video conferencing at specified time blocks.
