Program Description

Electrical engineering applies mathematical and physical principles to a wide variety of electrical, electronic, or computer-based devices and systems. A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Washington State University prepares students for careers in the design, analysis, and improvement of electrical, electronic, or computer-based systems.

The bachelor of science in electrical engineering curriculum includes a solid foundation in mathematics and sciences that prepares students for careers in areas including power systems, electromagnetics, systems and control, solid state electronics, communications and signal processing, and radio frequency engineering and wireless communications.

The major in electrical engineering has several areas of special emphasis, including:

  • Computer engineering
  • Energy and power systems
  • General
  • Microelectronics
  • Systems engineering (communications, controls, and signal processing)

Strengths of the program

  • Solid theory foundations and hands-on learning experiences make WSU graduates highly sought by employers.
  • Receive assistance on career goals with the engineering school's industrial advisory board and numerous internship and career contacts.
  • Assist faculty in research on microelectronics, electromagnetics, communications and signal processing, power systems, integrated circuit design, and computer engineering.
  • Use state-of-the-art laboratories to study computer systems, high-voltage systems, wireless communications, signal processing, circuits, protective power relay systems, and electro physics.

Student Living - Stephenson Complex

When choosing housing arrangements, the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture strongly encourages incoming freshmen to sign up for Stephenson Complex, which offers a living-learning community for students interested in science, engineering, and mathematics.

Campus organizations and activities

Join the active Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) student chapter, which organizes a career fair each spring featuring more than 60 industry representatives. You can also join the student chapter of the ACM (Association of Computing Machinery).

Life-changing research

Education that spurs action

A community of Cougs

Mission

To advance knowledge through creative research and scholarship across a wide range of academic disciplines.

To extend knowledge through innovative educational programs in which emerging scholars are mentored to realize their highest potential and assume roles of leadership, responsibility, and service to society.

To apply knowledge through local and global engagement that will improve quality of life and enhance the economy of the state, nation, and world.

Academic Excellence

Globally recognized programs and faculty

WSU's programs are ranked among the best nationally and internationally in the fields of engineering, computer science, hospitality, business, and many more. WSU students learn from faculty and researchers who are leaders in their fields. Eight WSU faculty are recognized as National Academy members - one of the highest honors given to faculty at U.S. higher education institutions.

Learn by doing

WSU places a strong emphasis on learning by doing and encourages students to apply their knowledge in the real world. Students can launch their own businesses through the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies; learn to use tools such as 3D printers and plasma cutters in the Frank Innovation Zone; or create their own television shows at WSU's Cable 8 Productions. Students in every major have opportunities to gain practical experience that can eventually lead to Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment at competitive, U.S.-based international companies.

Honors College

The Honors College prepares top students in all majors for influential careers. The curriculum lets students choose among dozens of specialized classes in place of required general education courses. Class sizes are typically capped at 25 students. A thesis project allows students to conduct mentored research, exploring an academic question of importance to them. The College attracts top students from across the United States and around the world. Honors alumni have distinguished records of leadership.

Accelerated tracks to advanced degrees

Unique opportunities for graduate students

Interdisciplinary doctoral degrees

Tailor your doctoral degree to your interests in programs that bridge disciplines:

  • Individual interdisciplinary doctoral degree: Custom-designed degree program that spans 3 disciplines
  • Molecular plant sciences: Degree program that incorporates plant physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology
  • Materials science and engineering: Program that focuses on the discovery, invention, or engineering of new materials and phenomena
  • Engineering science: Degree program that blends engineering with other fields, such as physical or life sciences
  • Prevention science: Program in which you design programs, practices, and policies to prevent or reduce the severity of community health issues
