Program Description

The goals of the Biology Major are:

To equip the graduate with the appropriate knowledge, skills, and background to pursue graduate studies in Biology or in professional schools for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, allied health, or other related areas;

To improve the acquisition of critical thinking skills necessary for the understanding and practice of science;

A major in Biology consists of:

  • At least 45 semester hours of course work in Biology (four of which are elective hours)
  • 20 semester hours of course work in Chemistry
  • 8 semester hours of Physics
  • 6 semester hours of Computer Science
  • 9 hours of Mathematics.

A graduate is also required to complete the College’s General Education requirements and three (3) elective semester hours outside of the department.

About the School

Founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee, who was barely older than some of today's students, Voorhees College has a rich history and a bright future. We're a fully accredited historically black liberal arts college that offers degrees in 12 disciplines – a number that's growing as we grow. Through our long-standing affiliation with the Episcopal Church, Voorhees focuses on developing students spiritually as well as intellectually.

History

Founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright Menafee, Voorhees College’s mission always has been to offer all students a quality comprehensive general education, coupled with professional education, in a value-centered liberal arts tradition. In addition, Voorhees College was the first Historically Black College and University in South Carolina accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
