Course summary

Business information specialists are trained to analyse business problems and find possible IT solutions for these problems. This ranges from running an efficiency audit on a company's information systems through to analysing the effectiveness of a file management system and designing business software applications.

Business information specialists are also involved in the analysis, design, implementation, maintenance and enhancement of computer-based information systems critical to the successful operation of modern organisations. These specialists require a sound understanding of the business requirements to develop information systems and solutions to meet identified business needs and must deal with users at all levels within an organisation.

This course is specifically designed to prepare you for a career as a systems analyst or an information systems specialist. As well as having the capability of working in a business environment, graduates can work for the government or non-profit organisations.

The Bachelor of Business Information Systems provides foundation knowledge of organisational areas in IT, including:

You will also study key commerce subjects such as accounting and management. In your final year, you will develop your own application as part of an annual student team project, developing solutions to real-world problems provided by our industry partners.

Course Learning Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes are statements of learning achievement that are expressed in terms of what the learner is expected to know, understand and be able to do upon completion of a course. Students graduating from this course will be able to demonstrate:

  • Demonstrate theoretical and technical knowledge of business information systems and the ability to apply this knowledge in developing effective information systems.
  • Perform analysis and design in developing computer applications within business contexts.
  • Develop effective systems implementation within business contexts.
  • Think creatively in identifying effective system solutions for business problems.
  • Function effectively as part of a team to accomplish a set of common goals and objectives and communicate with project stakeholders.
  • Apply informed professional judgments regarding ethical and responsible decision making with consideration of related social responsibilities.
  • Reflect upon work practices, tools and frameworks for ongoing professional development.

Course Structure

To qualify for an award of the degree, the Bachelor of Business Information Systems, candidates must satisfactorily complete at least 144 credit points, comprised of the following:

138 credit points of core subjects, as set out in the Bachelor of Business Information Systems Core Subject List, and One (1) elective subject (6 credit points), chosen from the General Schedule, School of Computing and Information Technology Subject List or Business Schedules.

Note:

  • A maximum of 60 credit points of 100-level subjects can be undertaken as part of the Bachelor of Business Information Systems degree.
  • The Faculty encourages the development of ICT skills and knowledge in the workplace through an industry placement. Completion of ISIT200 Industry Placement, which is a minimum of a single 8-week period of approved industry placement, assessed in the form of written reports is highly recommended to all students to complete this placement.

Credit for Prior Learning

If you can demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for our subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, you may be eligible for credit towards your degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.

Upon successful completion of the UOW College Diploma of Information Technology, you will receive a credit of 48 credit points towards a Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS) at UOW. You will be required to meet minimum subject requirements in order to progress from the Diploma of IT into the second year of a BBIS.
