From cinematography to silent movies to music in film, this BA Film Studies degree course provides you with everything you need to understand the different aspects of film. As a film student at the University of Southampton, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture by spending a semester, a year, or a summer at one of our international partner institutions.
You can select from a wide range of innovative modules and acquire knowledge of the critical theoretical debates in film studies. You have the option to take 25 percent of your programme in an alternative subject.
Years one and two offer a grounding in how to read film, covering key debates in film theory and cinema history.
Individually supervised dissertation on a topic of your choice in year three.

*Our preferred subjects are English Literature, English Language and Literature, History, Philosophy, Film Studies, Law, Politics, Classical Civilisation and Religious Studies.
IB: International Baccalaureate 32 points overall, 16 at higher level
International students who do not currently meet our entry requirements may be able to join this course on successful completion of our International Foundation Year.

Southampton is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England.
We are situated 75 miles from London; 19 miles from Portsmouth and 12 miles from Winchester. We are only a few minutes from the New Forest National Park which is 219 square miles of beautiful parkland and forest. Much of South-west Hampshire is beautiful countryside which extends into south-east Wiltshire and towards the east of Dorset. We are also very close to Stonehenge, one of the wonders of the world and the best known prehistoric monument in Europe.
Southampton has a population of approximately 220,000 and is one of the UK's most green and pleasant metropolitan areas. Southampton has its own airport and fast rail links to London and the rest of the UK. Being located on the south coast we are the home of Carnival UK and have the largest cruise ships in the world visit us on a regular basis.
