Program Description

Biologists have exciting and rewarding careers in medicine, biotechnology, and environmental conservation and management. Biologists study living things to understand how they function, survive, and evolve. They may study bacteria and viruses that threaten human health or larger organisms such as red-spotted newts or brown bears. Whatever the scale, biological research increases our understanding of health and wellness and the threats to our environment.

You'll get a strong and broad foundation in life sciences by learning the full range of biological topics, from DNA and cells to whole animals and ecosystems.

You'll gain hands-on experience. Work as an intern, shadow a physician or health care worker at a local hospital. Interact with local health and environmental agencies. Take summer field courses at Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology on wildlife biology, reptiles and amphibians. Gain environmental skills in neighbouring Allegheny National Forest and nearby aquatic natural habitats. You’ll also develop research skills when you choose a topic and work closely with your professor on your two-semester capstone experience, then get the chance to present your research at a local scientific meeting.

About the School

Students at Pitt-Bradford live and learn on a friendly, inclusive and welcoming campus where they receive personalized attention and earn the well-respected University of Pittsburgh degree.

An inclusive, welcoming and vibrant campus

Our campus was established in 1963 because there were no colleges or universities in the north-central region of Pennsylvania. In the early years, most of our students came from the local area. Since then, our campus has grown into an inclusive, diverse, and vibrant community.

Our students come from nearly every county in Pennsylvania, more than 20 states – as far away as Alaska and California – and many countries, including China, India, Nepal, Philippines, Nigeria, Russian Federation, Bangladesh, Dominican Republic and Pakistan.

Our 470-acre campus is home to our student-focused learning community, where our faculty challenge our students to discover more than they imagined; nurture them as they develop into happy, healthy, intellectually curious individuals; and equip them to take a lead role in our globally interconnected world.
