Program Description

The School of Nursing’s undergraduate nursing program has patient-centered care at the core of the curriculum. The School of Nursing offers three sub plans for a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (Traditional BSN, RN-BSN & Accelerated Second Degree). Each plan is intense and demanding. Students must complete all prerequisite courses before taking the nursing courses. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing prepares students for entry-level nursing practice as well as future graduate study. All students must successfully complete the pre-major requirements before they will be considered for admission to the major.

The undergraduate nursing program prepares a clinical practice generalist. Students attain the knowledge, competencies, and attitudes to practice nursing safely, effectively, and efficiently. Graduates of the program are expected to demonstrate competencies consistent with being a critical thinker, a culturally competent caring provider of health care, an effective communicator, and a responsible manager of health care. Graduates are prepared to be successful during the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), which is required to practice and be licensed as a registered nurse in all states.

About the School

Nurse Leaders Begin Here. Our mission is to educate nurses at the undergraduate and graduate levels to meet health care needs in Nevada and beyond. The School of Nursing promotes, improves, and sustains human health through evidence-based education and advances in research and practice.

The UNLV School of Nursing provides the initial educational experience for many of the nurses practicing in Southern Nevada. Many nurses with graduate degrees work as health care leaders in the Las Vegas area. The school benefits from a mixture of faculty whose backgrounds and educational preparation is remarkably diverse. The faculty continues to serve the community and to the university. Many have extensive publications to their credit and pursue research interests that will benefit the community and society. The school has high expectations of our students, our graduates and our faculty. As the school forges ahead, we will keep in mind our mission: To educate nurses who will stand as a symbol to all — intelligent, caring, and respected.
