Program Description

The Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (IE MS) is suitable for individuals with an accredited baccalaureate degree in engineering or from any other discipline (e.g. mathematics, business, psychology, physics, and alike). Applicants with a baccalaureate degree other than Industrial Engineering should consult with the Director of Graduate Studies (Dr. Lihui Bai) in the Department of Industrial Engineering on their readiness and necessary remedial work in order to succeed. The University of Louisville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC) to award master's degrees.

Why MSIE @ UofL

  • GRE not required
  • TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo accepted
  • Students with diverse backgrounds (including those with non-engineering undergraduate degrees) can join the program
  • Scholarships available to deserving students (see below under Scholarships)

About the School

Speed School is the only place in the commonwealth of Kentucky where you can study Industrial Engineering. We offer BSIE, MEngIE, MSIE (on-campus and online), MEngEM (online only), and Ph.D. The three required Co-ops in the BSIE program provide students needed practical experience to help them bridge theory and practice. The unique Accelerated Pathway allows receiving both BS and Master’s degrees in <5 years. Two online graduate programs (MSIE and MEngEM) allow working professionals to acquire advanced training and grow in their careers. Merit-based scholarships are available in all programs to help offset educational costs.

Why choose Industrial Engineering?

A degree in Industrial Engineering opens doors to high-tech careers in process management, logistics, and the design of large-scale systems like factories, hospitals, or even theme parks! As an Industrial Engineering student, you will learn how organizations operate, learn to design and improve complex systems, and study manufacturing for product realization and production. Upon graduation, you can apply your skills across any industry while leveraging the inside track to management roles as you work with people.

Mission

The mission of our Industrial Engineering programs, which aligns with the University of Louisville Mission Statement and J.B. Speed School of Engineering Mission Statement, is to:

“provide outstanding industrial engineering educational opportunities for regional, national, and international students, while maintaining our societal commitment to the development of new knowledge through the integration of research, scholarship, and practice.”

Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years after graduation from the industrial engineering program, alumni are expected to be:

  • successful in the professional practice of industrial engineering,
  • effective communicators and team players, and
  • involved in professional service and lifelong learning.

Program Criteria

  • The curriculum must prepare graduates to design, develop, implement, and improve integrated systems that include people, materials, information, equipment, and energy.
  • The curriculum must include in-depth instruction to accomplish the integration of systems using appropriate analytical, computational, and experimental practices.
  • Evidence must be provided that the program faculty understand the professional practice and maintain currency in their respective professional areas.
  • Program faculty must have a responsibility and sufficient authority to define, revise, implement, and achieve program objectives.

Student Outcomes

The faculty of the Department of Industrial Engineering actively monitor all aspects of the programs to ensure that the objectives are met and that graduates demonstrate the following outcomes:

  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
  • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions; and
  • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BS IE) and the Master of Engineering in Industrial Engineering (MEng IE) programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The Co-op program is accredited by The American Council for Cooperative Education (ACCE).

The Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (MS IE), Master of Engineering in Engineering Management Online (MEEMO), and Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial Engineering (Ph.D. IE) are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
