Program Description

Upskill your non-computer science background with this generalist master’s degree. You’ll acquire specialist knowledge and technical skills that have immediate application within the workplace. The primary focus of this online programme is to equip the students with the ability to research, propose and implement creative solutions to practical problems with the domain of Data Science and AI. Throughout your study you will have the opportunity to delve into the theories and practices of maths and statistics, software development, databases and information systems. Your learning will be supported by cutting-edge research into the field by the University of Liverpool, who is a world leader in data science and artificial intelligence research. Our Digital Innovation Facility, which officially opened in 2022, provides a purpose-built environment for cutting-edge research into multiple academic disciplines including AI, robotics and data analytics. The MSc programme is accredited by the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, for the purposes of meeting the further learning academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional. The programme is made up of the following modules and, upon completion, is equal to a total of 180 credits.

  • Global Trends in Computer Science (15 credits)
  • Mathematics and Statistics for Data Science and AI (15 credits)
  • Software Development in Practice (15 credits)
  • Databases and Information Systems (15 credits)
  • Elective modules (choose three from):
    • Reasoning and Intelligent Systems* (15 credits)
    • Machine Learning in Practice* (15 credits)
    • Multi-Agent Systems* (15 credits)
    • Robotics* (15 credits)
    • Deep Learning* (15 credits)
    • Natural Language Processing and Understanding* (15 credits)
    • Data Visualisation and Warehousing (15 credits)
    • Cloud Computing (15 credits)
    • Networks and Web Technology (15 credits)
  • Research Methods in Computer Science (15 credits)
  • Computer Science Capstone Project (60 credits)

*Note – Two out of the three electives must be selected out of Reasoning and Intelligent Systems, Machine Learning in Practice, Multi-Agent Systems, Robotics, Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing and Understanding.


Shorter awards are available for this course; the 16-month postgraduate diploma (PG Dip) at 120 credits and the 8-month postgraduate certificate (PG Cert) at 60 credits.


Teaching methods and style  This programme is designed to be studied wholly online and part-time. Teaching is delivered through our state-of-the-art Virtual Learning Environment  (VLE), which provides students with access to all resources required for interactive study online. On this platform you will be encouraged to work collaboratively with classmates and actively read around your topic through our comprehensive library of eBooks and journals.

Methods of assessment  Assessment is exclusively through online assignments rather than examinations. You will be assessed through a range of activities, including written assignments, discussion forum participation and journal entries.

Admission Requirements

All applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you want to discuss your previous qualifications and experience before applying, please contact our Admissions Team. Applicants should possess either:

  • (i) a degree in any subject equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s degree (2:2 or above), or
  • (ii) at least 2 years experience in employment, which would normally be of a technical nature, comparable with the award of a bachelor’s degree.

All applicants must provide evidence that they have an English language ability equivalent to an IELTS (academic) score of 6.5. If you don’t have an IELTS or equivalent certificate, you can take our free online English test to assess your proficiency. You don’t need to prove your English ability if you are a national of, or have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in, any of the countries listed on our website.
