Why University of Jamestown?

Student success is driven by relationship-based connections with faculty and classmates. University of Jamestown students have the benefit of a small campus and small class sizes. Faculty members know students individually and make connections that last well past graduation. One-on-one relationships between student and faculty help students realize their full intellectual and personal potential. Relationships developed between classmates are vitally important for peer learning and support. These relationships can have long-lasting benefits such as job placement and career advancement.

A curriculum grounded in liberal arts provides engineering students with more than just technical expertise. Today’s engineers need to think about sociological, cultural, and environmental impacts of designs. A mechanical engineering degree from University of Jamestown combines the rigorous foundation of engineering courses with the human dimensions of technology.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Of the many fields of engineering, mechanical engineering is likely the broadest. In the most basic definition, mechanical engineering utilizes principles of motion, energy, materials, and force towards the engineering design of mechanical devices. Because there are numerous mechanical devices, the applications of mechanical engineering are nearly limitless. Nearly every company or organization that designs and manufactures a product employs mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineers can also be found in research laboratories, the military, government, and in other professions such as medicine, law or teaching.

Another important area of employment for mechanical engineers is manufacturing. Manufacturing occupations cover almost everything involved in developing a product, from selecting the appropriate materials for different components of a product to choosing the correct/best machinery to manufacture them. Most mechanical engineers in this industry work for equipment manufacturers, aerospace companies, utilities, material processing plants, transportation companies, and petroleum companies.
