Program Description

Outdoor Studies is an intensive humanities program that offers students the opportunity to develop skills and characteristics that are essential to success as a leader in outdoor and adventure settings and to better understand the human relationship to the natural world.

The program incorporates outdoor risk management, leadership skills, specific outdoor activity skills, and academic work. The combination of outdoor and academic courses is designed to develop knowledge and personal traits such as self-reliance and good judgement.

Many students are working to become outdoor professionals, are curious about better understanding the natural world, or simply want to achieve more general goals related to personal development and leadership. Options include a two-semester intensive certificate program, four-year bachelor programs, and a minor.

About the School

University of Alaska Southeast takes advantage of our location in Southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest for study in the sciences and humanities.

University of Alaska Southeast offers both online and on-campus programs in the sciences, including marine biology, English, social science, liberal arts, business, education, construction, power technology, fisheries, maritime training, health sciences, and more.

All University of Alaska Southeast campuses are in coastal ocean communities; many of our programs take advantage of our locations for marine and maritime study and career opportunities.

Juneau offers housing and a traditional campus life experience as well as on-campus and online classes. With student activities, clubs, a recreation center, and residential halls and apartments, life on the Juneau campus could be considered comparable to attending a small private college.

Ketchikan offers on-campus and online classes and is home to the University of Alaska Southeast Maritime Training Center.

Sitka offers on-campus and online classes. The Sitka campus’ signature programs include nursing, fisheries, and construction.
