The Bachelor in Digital Film & Television Production programme at Grimsby is designed to equip you with a broad range of production skills and techniques appropriate for employment in the media industries. The programme has been created and developed by experienced and active industry practitioners who are on hand to guide you through the course, developing your practical skills and preparing you for industry. The significant proportion of the work is practical, with some academic, creative and reflexive writing.

There are no exam papers on the programme; the grading for your degree is based on assignments that you hand in, which include single and multi-camera film productions, documentaries and motion graphic sequences.

Your time at University is an opportunity to allow your creativity to flourish, and the University Centre in Grimsby is the perfect place for this. On the course, you have full access to two fully integrated, multi-camera HD Studios (one of which is an impressive green screen virtual studio with motion capture capabilities) Sony EX3 and EX1 cameras, edit suites equipped with Final Cut Studio and Adobe Master Collection and a range of additional hardware, all there to give your films that professional edge.

With a range of creative courses all under one roof in the University Centre, collaboration with like-minded creative students is encouraged to take your TV and Film projects to that next level. On top of all this, we also have our very own broadcasting Television channel on campus, giving you the opportunity to obtain real, professional work experience whilst carrying out your studies on the course - a unique feature to the Digital Film & TV Production course in Grimsby!

Entry requirements:

Standard entry requirement for the degree is 180 UCAS points, minimum. However, in line with the widening participation brief and lifelong learning strategy, the Institute will also encourage applications from non-traditional learners who lack formal academic qualifications. We consider lots of different qualifications, to make sure that those who have the talent and the ability to study and learn with us are given the chance to do so.

International Students also require an IELTS score of 5.5 in all areas or a B2 equivalent English Language qualification

What you will learn:

Year One - Level 4 - Certificate Stage

The first year of the course is designed to give a broad range of core skills that will go on to feed in to further modules later on the degree. In your first year you will do single camera film production, multi-camera TV studio production, screenwriting, introduction to factual programming, production planning, and look at digital media theory.

Year Two - Level 5 - Diploma Stage

The second year of the course aims to develop your core base of production skills, looking in more depth at advanced techniques, and introducing you to aspects such as broadcast motion graphics. These modules focus on developing your ability to produce high quality content, understanding the production process in detail, and open you up to a range of media theories related to the information age. During your second year on the course, you will actively partake in Work Based Activity, working with a local media employer to develop your professional skills.

Year Three - Level 6 - Honours Stage

A chance for you to fully explore the possibilities and use the skills you have learned from the two previous years of the course to produce a piece of work of exceptional quality. Your Final Major project is your chance to demonstrate your filmmaking potential to its highest level, giving you the opportunity to specialise in a creative medium of your choice, be it factual or fictional*. Alongside this, you will carry out an extended study in an area of your choice to produce your Dissertation, and you will also be given the opportunity to develop your professional portfolio, getting you ready for the media industry by the time you leave the University.

  • Students will choose either a Drama OR Documentary for the 'Final Project'

How is the course assessed:

Whilst on this programme students will be assessed using a variety of methods: essays/reports, journals/notebooks/sketchbooks, individual and group presentations, practical studio work, evaluative statements, visual analysis evidenced in developmental studies and creative outcomes and a final dissertation.

Employment information:

Upon successful completion of this degree, graduates will be equipped with the knowledge and creative skills to pursue a new career, or advance an existing one in the field of Digital Film or TV Production. Employment in media is often on a Freelance basis, and previous graduates have gone on to work for large media corporations such as BBC or Sky, or chosen to set up their own thriving media production company in the local area.

Courses

We have a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for international students. To be eligible for a Tier 4 Student Visa the course you apply for must be full-time and be at minimum Level 3 on the national qualification framework.

If you are an international student, wanting to apply for a course at the Grimsby Institute or University Centre Grimsby you will need to follow a strict set of instructions, particularly if you are a non-EU citizen and require a Visa to study in the UK.

From the day you apply, we will be in regular contact via email to let you know the progress of your application. Once your application has been accepted and you have received your official documents we will support you with advice throughout your Visa process.

On receiving a valid Student Visa you will then make your travel arrangements and keep us informed. Should you have any questions or concerns at any point we are here to help at any time and in any way we can. This is the time when we can arrange accommodation within our Halls of Residence.

The Grimsby Institute & University Centre Grimsby's duties as a licensed sponsor

We have a licence to sponsor students which impose duties upon us. In order to comply with these conditions we must:

  • Keep a copy of your Passport(s), Visa(s) and/or Biometrics card(s)
  • Keep an up-to-date record of your contact details and UK address. This is monitored by the International Office and reported to the UKBA when required

We will report to the UK Border Agency (UKBA) if:

  • You fail to enrol on time
  • You are absent without permission for a prescribed period
  • We are no longer your licensed sponsor
  • Your circumstances change if, for example, your course of study changes or becomes shorter or longer
  • We have evidence that you are breaking the conditions of your Visa

Living in Grimsby

Grimsby is located on the East Coast of the United Kingdom and has a population of approximately 160,000 people. Grimsby was founded on the fishing industry and in days gone by, was one of the largest fishing ports in the World. Today Grimsby supports major food processing, chemical and petroleum companies using our extensive ports as an export gateway to Europe and the World. The surrounding countryside presents plenty of opportunities for outdoor leisure activities. The beautiful and serene Lincolnshire Wolds, the curious coastlines and the long, sandy beaches offer much to explore by bicycle or on foot.

First-time visitors to the area are often surprised at the number of facilities for entertainment, sport and leisure activities in and around Grimsby. If you're interested in sports, you'll enjoy facilities offered at the two modern leisure centres, where swimming, ice-skating, squash, badminton and fitness suites amongst many other activities can all be enjoyed.

There's also an athletics stadium and an up-to-date swimming complex close to the Institute. If you enjoy watching sport, Blundell Park is home to Grimsby Town Football Club and the area has a number of cricket clubs as well as access to all major sports disciplines.

The neighbouring seaside town of Cleethorpes also has a ten-pin bowling centre, multi-screen cinema and the hugely successful Pleasure Island theme park.

Grimsby Auditorium features everything from live entertainment, concerts and the Royal Shakespeare Company, with smaller venues like the Caxton Theatre and Parkway Cinema offering a range of plays, musicals and other forms of theatre and the Arts.

Both Grimsby and Cleethorpes, offer great shopping with a range of big-name retailers and boutiques. A good nightlife is also on offer with a wide selection of pubs, clubs, restaurants and takeaways.
