Program Description

BSc - Bachelor of Life Sciences

The objective of this bachelor’s degree is to allow students to acquire solid scientific knowledge for a real understanding of the living things. This also involves the teaching of biology and the general organisation of the animal and vegetable kingdoms as well as the functioning of organisms, from the molecular level to integrated biological systems. Teaching is designed to combine fundamental concepts and teaching of methodological tools. As often as possible, topical issues in research and its applications are presented. Objectives also include demonstrating that an understanding of the living world is done through a multidisciplinary approach, giving students the tools and concepts that will allow them to make diagnostic evaluations and establish corrective measures in all the fields of biology and developing critical analysis of the concerns of society in relation to biology (cloning, GMOs, health, the environment).

Competence

Skills in the Discipline

  • be capable of setting up an experimental strategy in response to a biological problem
  • know how to use and adapt analytical and data treatment tools in different fields of biology
  • be capable of using the biology’s study tools, including bioinformatics and statistics tools

General Skills know how to:

  • read and comment on scientific texts in English
  • research and collect information and verify it
  • conduct bibliographic research in relation to a scientific theme
  • define a scientific study and present it in written form and verbally

Opportunities

Further studies - Vocational bachelor's, in particular, UPMC's in the biotechnical sector: LPC coder, biohygienics, LiQual, food safety bachelor and a bachelor's in water resources and quality in the environment.

  • Entry into the third year of competitive exam or applications to engineering schools, veterinary schools, business schools, the Écoles normales supérieures (ENS).

– Competitive exams for civil service positions (categories A and B).

– After the third validated year, further education with a science and technology master’s degree in molecular and cellular biology, physiology and integrative biology, sciences of the universe, environment, ecology.

– Competitive exams for recruitment as primary-school teachers, certified teachers and teachers who have passed the agrégation exam. Career Prospects This major leads to *technician and technical management jobs in the food industry, health and pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, chemistry, cosmetology, perfume, biotechnology occupations (production, packaging, testing, quality, marketing). It can lead to teaching, jobs as police technicians or engineers, and occupations in technology forecasting and scientific and technical information.

Well-targeted public - Students who have validated a BGPC programme (Biology, Geology, Physics, Chemistry) in the integration cycle of UPMC have full right to enter at L2. According to the particular details involved, entry into L2 can be offered to students who have partially validated their L1. After an interview with the studies department for L2, a learning contract is offered to these students.

  • Students coming from the first cycle of medical studies, the first year of preparatory classes for the grandes écoles or those holding a BTS or DUT can enter into the second year of the degree after their application has been examined.

  • Students coming from the second year of preparatory classes for the grandes écoles can enter the third year of the degree after their application has been examined.

  • Entry is also possible at L2 or L3 on the basis of validated studies, professional experience or professional skills.

  • Adjusted teaching timetables are possible for working students who can prove that they are working full- or parttime, those seeking employment, employees in continued education, students doing a double curriculum and disabled and special-needs students.

  • Those with DAEU (Diploma for entry into university studies).

About the School

In 2009, UPMC celebrated both the rehabilitation of the Zamansky tour and nine centuries of university activity on the site of the Saint Victor Abbey, renowned as a center of the Western intellectual renaissance, with a famous library and a training center for clerics.

This school, founded by Guillaume de Champeaux in 1109 , played a major role in the intellectual effervescence of the Latin Quarter for several centuries.

Grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, music, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and even technology were all taught there.

After the Revolution, the site was occupied by various warehouses, then the “halle aux vins”, before being reintegrated into the world of research as a part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris in 1959.

Under André Malraux’s leadership, the decision on the Albert project and the tower were made in 1963. And nine hundred years later, UPMC continues the quest for knowledge of the highest order in the heart of Paris.

Faculties and institutes UPMC is composed of seven departments and faculties : chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics, life sciences, earth sciences, environment, and biodiversity.

It also boasts an engineering school - Polytech'Paris UPMC, the Paris Astrophysics Institute, the Henri Poincaré Institute and 3 marine stations at Roscoff, Banyuls, and Villefranche-sur-Mer that have Universe sciences observatory (OSU) status.

Within the faculty of mathematics is ISUP, the premier school of statistics in France.

UPMC and the Val-d'Oise Yvelines chamber of commerce came together to create the first apprenticeship training body within a university framework: CFA UPMC.
