Program Description

BSc - Bachelor of Chemistry

Bachelor of Chemistry students are taught the principle fields of contemporary chemistry: molecular chemistry, solids and materials chemistry, physical chemistry and organic chemistry. This course provides students with the solid foundations necessary for further study (a master’s degree) or for the teaching professions .

The two-year course offers two specializations : chemistry, and physics and chemistry.

Those who intend to enter the workforce on the strength of their bachelor’s degree can choose from three vocational specializations :

  • Biotechnology Professions

  • Formulation Chemistry Professions

  • Organic Chemistry Professions

    Opportunities Further study

    • research or professional master’s degree
    • selection by written application for certain engineering schools

Careers

  • primary school teaching
  • public service administration
  • high school teaching
  • technician or assistant engineer after the L3 of a vocational bachelor’s.

Organization The course is organized into semesters, but all core papers offered in the first semesters of L2 and L3 are repeated in the second semesters (except for the vocational bachelor's papers).

Chemistry program The program covers the principal fields of contemporary chemistry, such as physical chemistry, molecular chemistry, organic chemistry and materials chemistry.

- L2 (2nd year level)

7 compulsory chemistry papers (42 ECTS), 1 compulsory mathematics paper (6 ECTS), 1 paper to be chosen from another specialization (6 ECTS), 1 general or scientific culture paper (3 ECTS), 1 language paper (3 ECTS).

- L3 (3rd year level)

11 compulsory chemistry papers (48 ECTS), 1 chemistry specialization paper to be chosen from 4 options (6 ECTS), 1 careers paper (3 ECTS) and 1 language paper (3 ECTS). Physics and chemistry program

The program gives solid foundations in both chemistry and physics, and aims to blur the boundaries between the two disciplines.

- L2 (2nd year level)

6 compulsory chemistry papers (33 ECTS), 4 compulsory physics papers (24 ECTS), 1 language paper (3 ECTS).

- L3 (3rd year level)

3 compulsory chemistry papers (18 ECTS), 3 compulsory physics papers (18 ECTS), 2 compulsory general papers (12 ECTS), 1 internship paper (6 ECTS), 1 careers paper (3 ECTS) and 1 language paper (3 ECTS). Well-targeted public

- L2 (2nd year level)

Students who have successfully completed the integration cycle (physics-chemistry-mechanics-electronics (PCME) or biology-geology-physics-chemistry (BGPC)), or equivalent.

- L3 (3rd year level) Students having successfully completed the L2 in chemistry, or equivalent (BTS, DUT, CPGE, foreign diplomas, etc.).

About the School

In 2009, UPMC celebrated both the rehabilitation of the Zamansky tour and nine centuries of university activity on the site of the Saint Victor Abbey, renowned as a center of the Western intellectual renaissance, with a famous library and a training center for clerics.

This school, founded by Guillaume de Champeaux in 1109 , played a major role in the intellectual effervescence of the Latin Quarter for several centuries.

Grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, music, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and even technology were all taught there.

After the Revolution, the site was occupied by various warehouses, then the “halle aux vins”, before being reintegrated into the world of research as a part of the Faculty of Science of the University of Paris in 1959.

Under André Malraux’s leadership, the decision on the Albert project and the tower were made in 1963. And nine hundred years later, UPMC continues the quest for knowledge of the highest order in the heart of Paris.

Faculties and institutes UPMC is composed of seven departments and faculties : chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics, life sciences, earth sciences, environment, and biodiversity.

It also boasts an engineering school - Polytech'Paris UPMC, the Paris Astrophysics Institute, the Henri Poincaré Institute and 3 marine stations at Roscoff, Banyuls, and Villefranche-sur-Mer that have Universe sciences observatory (OSU) status.

Within the faculty of mathematics is ISUP, the premier school of statistics in France.

UPMC and the Val-d'Oise Yvelines chamber of commerce came together to create the first apprenticeship training body within a university framework: CFA UPMC.
