The Master degree in Data Science and Scientific Computing (DSSC) aims to train professionals of the future: experts who are in high demand because of the digitalization of society and the evolution of Industry 4.0.
The Master degree is offered by the Universities of Trieste and Udine, in collaboration with SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies), ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), and of many other research institutions and companies. DSSC is an international course and is taught in English.
Students will acquire theoretical knowledge and learn how to apply it to solve practical problems, through individual exercises, group projects, seminars, and internships. Graduates could enter directly the business world or continue their studies with a Ph.D.
All students will receive a training in programming, HPC, basics of data analytics and modeling. Students can choose between two curricula, each providing a specialization in several application areas.
DATA SCIENCE: focus on data management, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical methods, Big Data.
COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING: focus on computational modeling, optimization, scientific programming, and simulation.
The Master degree in Data Science and Scientific Computing will provide some talented students with scholarships of 2800 euros - funded by companies and institutions - to cover the enrollment fee and for partial support. Sponsoring companies will offer an internship and tutoring to funded students.
From the academic year 2018/2019, there will also be scholarships sponsored by SISSA and by UniTS, covering full support.
The increasing presence of data in everyday life has changed the job market: NEW EXPERTS ARE REQUIRED. In Italy, from 2015 to 2016, there was an increase of 76% in requests for professionals in data science. (source: Report on Big Data, MIUR).
The European Data Science Academy confirmed this growing trend also for Europe: it estimated more than 500.000 job offers in the field of data science - data management, data analytics, HPC professionals - between 2014 and 2016. In addition, from 2016 the most required skills in the job market are specializations in big data and data science. (source: European Data Science Academy).
Founded in 1924 , the University of Trieste is a medium-sized university with a student population of approximately 16,000. It offers a wide range of degree programmes at bachelor, master and doctoral level, as well as short vocational masters, advanced masters and specialisation programmes, most of which are in the medical area. Some degree programmes are taught in English .
The university currently has 10 departments: Economic , Business, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences ; Engineering and Architecture ; Humanities; Legal, Language, Interpreting and Translation Studies ; Mathematics and Geosciences ; Medicine, Surgery and Health Sciences ; Life Sciences ; Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences ; Physics; Political and Social Sciences .
The university participates in many research projects at national and international level. It is also involved in various student and staff exchange programmes with universities in the EU and collaborates with several universities from Eastern Europe and other non-EU countries.
Universities are crossroads of knowledge.
Following the Lisbon strategy, which emphasizes the creation of a more competitive and dynamic knowledge-based society, international mobility and internationalisation of the universities may represent a strategic tool for a social, cultural and economic development of a country. They can be considered as a challenge and an opportunity for the involved Higher Institutions to enlarge and enrich their range of the courses offered.
The internationalisation of its system, which has been started by the University of Trieste since long, is perfectly in line with these points and lies also in the strategic position and historical international vocation of the city of Trieste.
The University of Trieste is actively involved in different Programmes at a European level (LLP Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Alpe Adria, Bovec Summer School) and within wider European (Tempus) and international frameworks (ISEP Programme, International Mobility Grant Programme, Marco Polo Project).
