The School of International and Area Studies strives to provide students with the ability to analyze and understand the complex structures of the world’s various regions, and to nurture human resources that can consider problems from a global perspective, and provide practical abilities towards a solution.
In order to understand the structure of modern international society and the essence of the problems that occur in various countries and regions of the world, the acquisition of appropriate methods is necessary. In the School of International and Area Studies, students deepen their knowledge of the politics, economics, societies, and histories of various regions, while also systematically learning the methodology of various fields related to the social sciences. Based on the knowledge and methodologies thus acquired, students gain insight into the origins of many problems affecting the modern world, such as trouble and conflict arising from rapid globalization, global warming and energy issues, and disparities and poverty between regions and social classes. Students will develop analytical abilities and the ability to take action that lead the way in solving these problems.
The Tokyo University of Foreign Studies is the oldest institution in Japan that is devoted to international studies. It began as Bansho Shirabesho (Institute for Research of Foreign Documents), a government translation bureau founded in 1856. It was then established as an independent educational and research institution with the name Tokyo Gaikokugo Gakko (Tokyo School of Foreign Languages) in 1899. In 1999, the University celebrated the 100th anniversary of its "independence."
